I bought a brand new American Special Precision bass with a mape neck a couple of weeks ago, which I absolutely love. Last night however, whilst playing, I noticed a very small, almost un-noticeable tiny raised area on the top of the neck, around the 11th fret. I think this is a very small mis-sanded area, or where a drip of lacquer. I know I'm being totally stupid, totally over the top as I don't even feel it when playing (I don't play with my thumb around the neck).

What I am really trying to say is...

Is this an easy job for a guitar tech to sand or buff away and refinish the neck, or is it something to be totally avoided. I know I am being totally stupid about this, but the rest of the neck is so silky smooth, all I can focus on today is the rougher area. It really is less than the thickness of a piece of paper difference for around 5mm around the 11th fret area.

Thanks...

Hmmmmm...what color is that area of the neck when you illuminate it with pure ultraviolet light?

Hmm, don't know as I don't have a UV light here. I know I'm being very picky. It's a tiny, tiny thing, it's not visible at all, you wouldn't know it was there if you wern't told. Do you know what the necks are finished with? I think I should probably leave it alone. I might forget about it in a week! But then I think, 1 or two passes with a fine grade sandpaper and it would go...

600 grit or 1200 grit wetsandpaper. light touch. or jeweler's rouge & a buffing wheel.

Sounds like a job for my local guitar tech. Many thanks!

I would leave it alone. Any change to the gloss finish on a maple neck will age differently from the original. That is being picky, and considering the bass many years down the road when it hits the collectable market.

You probably have a grand in it, so if it bothers you, I would consider returning it.

The stupidity and pickyness with which you approach this condition is not stupid or picky. You just dig the heck out of your guitar and I can't blame anyone on that. Right? I prob wouldn't mess with it unless I knew I could make it better myself. So anyway-- it's all down hill from here on out with it. You could just go do some gigs for a few years and after it has been hit with a trombone or a taco or something it probably won't make any diff anyway-- Rock out I say !!! :D

I wouldn't mess with it. Anytime you take sandpaper to a neck you or your local guitar tech is likely to over sand the area and make it worse.

I would subscribe to the Trombone +Taco theory of bass ownership.
Sooner or later it is going to get hit by something that will take your attention off of that original offensive area.

I wonder what the odds are of your bass getting hit by a trombone plus a taco on the same gig?
