Anyone knows what did Fender use for finishing their 70's P-basses?

Fender did not put nitro on the 70's standard issue models, did they? I have a '78 P-bass that needs light fretwork, but it's a maple board and finish is chipped all alongside both edges/bevels of the fingerboard.

I am not conducting any acetone tests :) There's very minimal patina, but body is already slightly worn down on the contours and in areas around the pickup where this player is the most active with his plectrum.

I just don't want to stick some masking tape on it and regret it later. Sometimes even the glue on the masking tape can react with nitro.

Thanks!

CBS used polyester on their guitars and basses.

The finish on a 70's P bass is Nitro-cellulouse on the peghead face, (that is to melt in the decal into the finish) the rest of the neck is done in polyester or polyurethane finish. Most of the bodies were done in polyurethane but some may be lacquer ( Custom colors?).

You are right on the money, my man. I wondered why does the headstock look more amber tinted than the rest of the neck.

I think it is a polyester type, I have seen thinner coats of PU, but always thicker coats of PE.
