I have a '65 Precision that needs a new nut, and since it is vintage it measures 1.74". All of the modern nuts I have found on ebay and the likes are 1-5/8". Does anyone know where I can pick up a pre-slotted 1.74" BONE nut? If you do you will be rewarded with my refret and new nut project!

Just take your bass to a good luthier. He'll fit and custom slot a new nut of your choosing. That is really the best way to do it. Toss in a new stringset and get a pro set-up at the same time would be smart money well spent. Perfect time to have your frets dressed & leveled too.

Fortunately I have not had to do this before I know every luthier is different, but what is the average cost of getting this done?

I recently just got my frets dressed & leveled; new strings + set-up for $140. I would think a new custom made nut installed should run $40-$50 if included with the other work. So maybe $200.

You've got some good people in Virginia Beach.

There's a shop in Northern VA that has a Plecking machine (the only one on the East Coast). $210 to have your neck Pleck'd. I passed on that, but they do have an excellent reputation. It just depends on the level of service you desire, and can afford. With a '65 P, I'd not cheap it out on a multi-thousand dollar vintage bass.

I know 2 guitarists that had the Pleck done. Thier guitars sound ever so sweet and in tune. The tone is very balanced and even. Probably a good thing to have done if you are a serious pro player.

A bone nut here where I live is $100. The fret level and set up is prob another 100 if they have to mess with the frets a lot. I'd go bone 100% on that old bass.

I'd say unless you have done a nut replacement many times== take it to the luthier. Especially if you have a vintage axe. You may know this already but it is so easy to mess up a fretboard just dislodging the nut if you don't do it right. Believe me- I've chipped a fretboard trying to just knock the nut out of its slot. You never know what kind of glue or whatever the guy before you used. If it's never had a new nut- caution still needs to be taken as it's still a delicate job.

So bass ically Linnin told you right.
