This is not exactly on the same street but rather in the same neighborhood. brotherdave,I was wondering what kind of strings you use (in your photos of your rig) ? They look like (nanoweb/nanowound ?) nylon. Not for sure. I'm currently using Rotosound FM66's 30-90 stainless steel. The reason for my question is, to be totally honest is I think they look really cool. By the way, are they flat or round wound & can you get either ? I prefer round wound. Not a kid here just one at heart (lol). Been playing too long to mention (about 30 yrs.). Just never seen any strings like that. Thanks for any & all inputs. 8)

Nothing wrong with that. You have a real nice collection of gear, and you are proud of it.

The photos had to be compressed and resized which made the strings look funky. I gig 4 basses and for the past 6 years I've exclusively used two Thomastik-Infeld sets which are the JF344 Jazz Flats and the EB344 Powerbass. A current trial of one GHS flatwound set and the newer TI Infeld set is in progress. I'll detail what I'm using now.

1. The Blonde 54 P custom bass, named Blondine, has T.I. EB344 POWERBASS roundwound strings. These are my favorite strings EVER on one of my favorite basses ever! If I could only have one bass and one set of strings, this setup would do. It has a Seymour Duncan SCPB3 Quarter Pounder but I'm probably going to try a Fralin Split Coil in this one soon. Since I was using Labella flats on it for a while it still has a Fender toploading 4 barrel bridge on it.

2. The sunburst 51 Reissue has had a GHS PRECISION FLATWOUND 3025 set on it now for about 3 months. This is the first time I've tried these strings and I like them VERY much. I first loaded Thomastik-Infeld JF344's on this bass but a friend pushed the GHS PRECISION 3025's on me and he's right about them being awesome on this bass. These GHS flats sound old school crazy-thumpy, which is a real change of pace from the TI Jazz Flats and more era accurate. The GHS set thumps a lot like the Labella 760 flats I used on and off from 68 through about 2002. I like the medium tension in the GHS 3025's too. I will keep using these GHS Flats for SURE. (Anyone with one of these '51 reissues really should use flats of some sort due to the very small "vintage" size frets which will be ground down in short order by a set of stainless rounds.) HOWEVER, I will also keep using the TI Flats on another bass for variety. It is hard to believe two sets of flats could sound so different and yet both sound so good! This bass has a Lindy Fralin Split Coil pickup and a Fender Deluxe convertible 4 barrel bridge.

3. The white 2006 MIM P-Bass reworked close to '62 specs has Infeld's latest IN344 Rounds on it. I've found that I don't like these strings as much as the Powerbass set on passive basses. When it is time to change strings I will put Powerbass strings on this bass. The IN344's remind me a lot of Ernie Ball rounds. While certainly very good strings, the Powerbass set is way better. Custom Shop pickup ceramic disc cap and standard top loading bridge.

4. My only active bass is a (GULP) 2005 Ibanez SRX700 neck-through loaded with Thomastik-Infeld JF344's. It is also the only unmodified one. In my defense, I bought it because it is identical to Carol Kaye's current bass. This is a good pairing with the smoothness of the TI Jazz Flat set taming the brute force of the massive alnico dual humbuckers and active EQ. I recommend these strings for their unique tone, but always with a caution that the feel and ultra-low tension takes getting used to. You can't really dig in on these strings when playing fingerstyle. A great recording string and easy to fret for sure but fingerstyle players can't get real aggressive.

Those are the only four basses I take out of the house. Blondine always goes to gigs and one of the others keeps her company. I've been favoring the Japanese '51 reissue over the MIM 06 P-bass lately because of the strings I think. If I'm going to be playing outdoors I'll take the active Ibanez because it seems to like being outdoors.

The only coated strings I've ever liked have been Fender & Gibson Nylon wrapped strings. But they went dead too quick and the frets chew up the nylon wrap even quicker so I stopped using them decades ago. These nylon wrapped strings really had a nice uprightish effect. I liked the sound a lot. This was a very long time ago though and they could have improved them.

I've also used Rotosound strings too, just not in the past 15 years. I liked them for the money and lots of players swear by them!

I did not like the coated Elixirs that came stock on the neck-through Ibanez one bit and replaced them with the TI JF344 Jazz Flats almost immediately to duplicate the current setup Carol Kaye uses. Some people like Elixers a lot, but after one minute I knew they had to come off fast because I didn't like the feel of the wacky coating. If roundwound longevity is the argument for coatings then the Thomastik-Infeld EB344 Powerbass set lasts plenty long enough and has the best feel of any round I've ever tried. While highly flexible you can play them super aggressively and the alloy wrap is easier on the frets than stainless rounds.

To review, you said your rig was a Rumble 100 and a GK head. I was asking how you connect the GK head and the Rumble combo together. I was wondering how those worked together.

Hey All,
After seeing all the awesome shots of P Basses it made me wonder what these beauties were being played through. So, what kind of setup does everyone have? I use an Ampeg SVT-3PRO running through a tiny bit of the FMR Audio RNC Compressoion into an Ampeg SVT-15E cabinet. On the floor I mainly use just a Big Muff for those down and dirty parts. I'd be curious to see what other setups are being used out in the bass world, thanks!

Oh my goodnesss look at all these rigs you bottom dwellers have. Brotherdave you have a nice office and Evan your rig has to tickle the bottoms of your feeT

^use www.photobucket.com it'll pretty much explain how you can use it, step by step. Just make sure you use medium pic setting, or it'll be too large. Welcome to the forums. Good luck posting.
