Thanks it has always been "special" to me and will never leave my possession until the breath leaves my body.
I was looking at my Mexican Jazz that had a smoke stain on the headstock and the white pick guard was smoked and the thing just plain looked plain.... So I decided to pep it up a bit and add some "Class" to it. I bought it cheap and didn't really WANT it at that time.
I like the look of the Older Jazz and I saw a pic of one. a 62 I think it was with a tortoise guard and Chrome Covers. LOVE the look. So I got a guard and covers and a tug bar and off I went. Headstock still retains the Mexican Serial and markings the rest is just cosmetic... it didn't fit in with the other kids... So it is definitely classed up now.
Like giving a marginally ugly gal a makeover! And catching her inner beauty...

Nice basses! I played a 52 back in about 1973. I loved it. Didn't want to put it down. I thought it was a Telecaster bass. But I kept looking at the headstock and it had a Precision decal. I didn't know at the time that the Tele was basically a copy of what I was playing! I was a newbie to bass but I got a good lesson that day. Wow - that was 41 years ago!! Man- oh man!

My Dad's 52 turned out to be a 51 I am tempted to take it to Guitar Center during a trade in event and see what they offer just so I can tell them NO!

Sorry,, I had to post this though- Guitar Center will NEVER give you what that guitar is worth. If you have to sell it you would do better to find a private buyer. I hope you know that and you were just messing around talking about going to Guitar Center. Dude they throw guitars away in a dumpster out back of the store. Did you know that?? They would see you coming with that bass and sure they'd drool and they may give you a handfull of money BUT you will have blown it. They'll be laughing when you walk out the door. Then they'll call that guy over in Japan who will give them 50GRAND for it... or something like that or the big boss will keep it and play it like he stole it.

As I said, Just so I could say NO!
and trust me there is no one at the local guitar center that would likely know what it was in the first place... I would never sell it.

I got your joke and love it! I would love to see their initial reaction.
It would be interesting to see if they would know immediately what you had or do a google search.

They have their methods. I know on non-vintage used gear they give you half of what they can sell it for so if they could sell it for $20K they would give you $10K according to their policy. Wonder what they do for vintage gear?

In my opinion your bass is beyond vintage. It is one actual instruments that changed the music industry forever. From eroding the Big Band concept to stage setups as well as recordings.

Again I say great bass! Feel free to post as many pics as you can stand. We love to drool over them.

Very nice family.

And we all know, the very best way to sell a 51P is to call a-f-f-p-r-o-d. :D

Not for sale but I haven't gotten an appraisal either.
One of these days I will get one.

Detlef Schmidt did an appraisal on Dad's 1951 P,
Serial Number: #0213
Year: 1951
My name is Detlef Schmidt, Germany. I am the author of the book about vintage Fender Basses
named “Fender Precision Basses 1951-1954” by Centerstream Publishing.
I was sent the following photos of the above named bass by Kerry Kroger. Here is a little story that
came with the photos:
“I'll share my Dad's bass. He purchased it NEW in 1951, he always told me it was a special order. At
the time he was a working musician. I have 78RPM records with Dad's voice on them and this
instrument. Growing up it lived in the living room closet, Dad had long since given up the musician
life, I was never allowed to play or handle the thing growing up. Almost lost it in a fire at one point. I
have been asked many times how my dad managed to get one so early in the production. Truth is I
don't really know. Also of note is the music store marked it on the ticket as "Fender Electric Bass
Violin". I do not have the original "Case" nor do I have an original "Bassman" amp.”
This is one of the 83 Fender Precision Basses, that Leo Fender ‘s company build in 1951.
Together with its original bill from December 1951, this is just an historic bass, and also together
with the original 78 of a Country and Western Bass and the matching photos, this is a perfect
collectors piece. The condition the bass is in, is also excellent and it is in 100 % original condition.
It may very well be the best preserved 51 - I can't recall one in such fine condition. The phenolic
saddles and the guard have survived especially well.
My estimation of the value of this bass with bill and record and photos is
20.000 Dollars
