The 52P, all authenticated as original in excellent vintage condition I expect would sell in the $12K- $13K area in today's market. I think it would appraise $3K-$4K higher than that. However, once things get changed, the value drops rapidly. I recently paid $5400 for a very nice 52P, but it had been refinished a while back. Nice job, looks original, but it really cuts into value. It was appraised at $9K, and I personally think that was generous, so you can see the difference this low market makes, as well as the drop due to the refinish.

Amazing instrument! Happy to see it survived.

Affprod's pricing estimate, IMO, is about right. And of course an instruments worth is dictated by real buyers of these rare beauties. As others have said the more original parts, the higher the value...down to the screws. An original case will also bring the value up(of course you mentioned the fire's wrath taking care of that-"shrinky-dink").

There were not many of these basses made and even less have survived. You have a real gem there :D

I have read every book out there on these early Fenders and suggest you picking up " Fender Precision Basses--1951-1954" by Detlef Schmidt. The author documents, through much research, many of the known early Fender and their serial numbers. Many detailed pics and great info.

If you own a 'real deal' like this you should own that book.
This is very exciting and thanks for sharing!

Feel free to ask us any questions you have about your rare bass.

-Joe

From my limited research abilities it looks like a 1951 and after reviewing the receipt that I still possess the Date on the receipt is December -5 1951 the 5 was written over the 4 in 194 and transferred on the carbon so difficult to read. then a 1 Look for yourselves in the original post and tell me what you think. All Hardware is original to this instrument for sure it lived in the closet in our living room for the majority of it's life, wish the original case still survived.

Very Special. Perhaps, extremely special. I look forward to a appraisal. My address for Christmas has not changed.

Hmmm Cryptic... I too look forward to that appraisal. I will probably go with the George Gruhn $50 4 pic appraisal, and depending on his findings I may upgrade to the $225 Hands On one where I have to take a road trip to Nashville...

Guitar center is having their annual "Trade In" special deal this month...
"Cash for your Old Guitar" it is tempting to let my inner devil tease them with it....
Then cut them off.

Good to know about that address!

However...

This instrument will not leave my possession until I am dead and buried.
then my surviving family members will come to my house and divvy up my gear...

With the Bass they will find a packet of photographs and the Appraisal of the instrument.
along with a short note saying which one of them should have "Grandpa's Bass"

My Bass Player Nephew made do with a Squier version of the Hotrod P-Bass.
"MY" bass will also go to him, it is a 2000 Fender Hotrod P in white with tortoise Pick Guard, and a maple fretboard... I do wish that this instrument had a Rosewood J Neck... I generally either played my Lake Placid Blue Strat... or The Hotrod P....
Dad's Bass always stayed home in the closet. I did play it a bit before I got the Hotrod P. He will likely be the recipient of the instrument.

Aaaaaannnnnnnnd he will likely sell it as he has little emotional attachment to it.

I thought Fender used dimpled pots or is this before that time?

A truly remarkable early P-bass. Never seen one in better shape frankly. If I ever win the lottery, I'm going to track down one of these rare gems and buy it. I don't care if it's $40K or more.

Your dad's bass is a 1951!!

The body date is Nov 5, 1951 and the neck date is Nov 20, 1951 with the TG initials so the neck's final shaping was done by Tadeo Gomez!

Then your dad bought it on Dec 5, 1951!

How did he get one so early? Did he know somebody at Fender?

Those pictures are amazing. Look at the pickup! Look at that capacitor! ASTRON caps!!

This bass blows me away. I think it is worth more like $25 -30 K!

Thanks for the pictures of a great Fender bass.

I was always told growing up that he special ordered it, he was a local player and loaned or owned several instruments, including a Gibson Acoustic that was pawned by another local "Cowboy Buddy" who had borrowed it from Dad. That was a LOT of money back then too...

Oh, man. That is a beauty! Congrats. Nothing compares to those early Single Coils. Leo got it right the first time.
