Fender still makes the best alnico's. The rest of the brands are only imitations.

I'm not sure I believe your bass is poplar.

Well,,,, I'm not going to sand down the finish to prove it. People may have to take my word. I bought it from the biggest music store here in town. I personally know the guy and we talked about different types of wood used in the quality control days. He mentioned poplar as being a wood the bass could be made from. That was in 79. I refinned it and worked my way thru the thick skin sealer in 79 to find the undried wood with it's thick green grain . We talked about it being poplar. The bass was refinned once again in 96 and the grain had dried to dark brown just as poplar does. I worked with poplar a lot during my years at the lumber yard. I was there a long time. I stacked boards, drove the lift, was a tally man and also drove semi tractor trailer as a delivery man. So I know just a small bit about the wood. I watched the poplar that never got sold many times - go from the green to brown as it dried.

I wouldn't go so in depth on this but I have posted that my bass is poplar before and have had responses telling me that it isn't. I have to face the fact and so may others that all is not cut and dry with Fender. Just because one did not read it somewhere doesn't mean it didn't happen or wasn't made or never got built etc etc... that's one of the things Forrest White eludes to in his book as to "no records of this or that". More later.... :D

There are pics of it somewhere on this site. I've posted it more than a few times.

And anyway....didn't you watch the video "All Your Base Are Belong To Us"? I don't want them to know I have it.

Made sometime around 2008 by a cat calling him/herself "Bad-CRC".

Stoker, I think we are pretty close to being in the same camp tone wise, but not sure if we are on the same planet. Zontar doesn't talk to me, so maybe you've got some guidance there I don't have access to at this time.

I like a really bright tone and thus I'm especially fond of the first generation P-Bass/Telecaster single coil version bass. If you still like that tone try the Fender Original Precision Bass pickup. I have found this to be the best and brightest pickup for a 2nd generation P-Bass for mids and upper mids. While I like the SPB3 for some things and the Wilde for P/J's and the Fralins can be nice and airy too, I will from now on only use the Fender Original Precision as long as I can get them. Right now I don't have a spare one, so if you buy one and don't think it is the upper mid bomb I'll buy it from you used for what you paid for it new, so long as you don't blast it with Zeta dark matter particle beams in your trials.

In stock production instruments which used this pickup Fender often uses a 0.1uF tone cap instead of the more commonly used 0.05uF tone cap. Try it with the 0.05uF and it sounds very close to a single coil first generation p-bass only with no hum.

Image

They come already mounted with foam on the brass baseplate. The plate is in the ground. It does fit in all Fender 2nd generation Precisions, even the Mexican ones.

It is the only pickup set I know of that comes this way. Mongo like!

Will that fit any of the Squiers, per chance?

I'm pretty sure it will fit the Squier P-Basses, but I've not tried it in one. Their pickups are the same size and if it takes a SPB-3 then it will take the Fender Original Precision. Even the pickup mounting screw holes should be a perfect match.

Thanks Dave-- I assume the output on the pickup you posted is much higher than the 74 one that came with the bass I have? I played a 64 P bass once that had the original Pickup and it put my 74 to shame all around. But I may have miss read- it sounds like the pickup you're talking about has the early 50's tone in a split P bass pickup. I played a 52 once and it sounded great.

Not exactly a 51-56 tone but the closest I've ever found personally in a split coil pair.
