I'm a die hard Rotosound strings/ Dimarzio user . I may need rehab.

In 09 I put the original pickup back in my 74 "A" neck Poplar body ( 70's Quality Control) Precision. I want to start using the bass again. I bought it in 79. I plugged it in today in my best rig. I was not impressed. Output volume is low and it sounds thin. It sounds about 1/2 as loud as I think it should . This is the reason I put a Dimarzio in it in 79 after I got it.

SO... I am willing to consider other pickups. Bartolini? Fralin? Any ideas?
This is my special bass and I want to try and put something in it that will give it the output I like and not sacrifice tone. I don't want to go active. The Dimarzios are 11K so I want to be in that range. I have 2 sets of P bass pickups from my Roadworn and Classic 50's available but I'm not sure I want to use them. I'll be playing Heavy Rock with the bass.
I guess I can stay with the Dims but I'm open to suggestion- price isn't a big deal if I get the monster singing tone. So help a brother out man ! Thanks :D

Well D'UH! How about a pair of Steve Harris signature p'ups from SD???

Also I just so happen to LOVE The pair of DiMarzio "Split P's" I put in my hot rod Precision.

Or better yet use BOTH! Just like I did. Sounds Absolutely Fabulous!

Except mine are the original SD Quarter Pounders. They ROCK!

I actually bought the Dimarzio rails for my newest P bass. They are loud and proud for sure. The way they sound in the ash body of the new P will not be how they sound in the poplar 74. They may sound better !! Like I said- I'm hooked on the Dims . I am willing to try something else though-- but maybe not.

I know ZERO about Steve Harris pickups by SD- I guess I'll search. Why do the poles look so far down in the holes? Did you put spacers under the covers? I've done that before to keep from ripping up my fingers.

I know the SPB 3's are good. There just seems to be a little something about them I'm not sure of. It's almost like the output of them kind of cancels the sound- like they are just loud. Kind of like a PV amp. ( HA!) no offense intended- I know PV is great. The old little amps they had were just blasting loud with no sweet sound to them- so hang me! :D

Just my opinion but, the only thing lacking with my SPB-3-'s is the Fender tone. I can hear the difference but I seriously doubt anyone but a bass player could really tell.

Yes SPB-3's are killer, My Steve Harris P-Bass has a SPB-1 pickup in it,...it's a very good pickup,... they're a reproduction of Leo Fender's 1957 dual coil design, they're very warm sounding & perfect if you're playing 60s or 70s Classic Rock :)

SPB-3 pickups have a scooped midrange and fantastic sensitivity.

While many people like it and it is probably the #1 aftermarket pickup swap, the Fender Original Precision Bass pickup is my favorite. Love that one a lot.

The SPB-3 pup on the Roger Waters Precision sounds great.

 If you were to hear my bass on a recording, you'd say something like "Damn Man! That Precision sounds fantastic!", and you'd be right of course. My hot rod out Fenders Fender. It's the very best sounding Fender Precision Electric Bass Guitar in the entire universe!

Sounds like you need a gold lined case and a big lock and an insurance policy for you not the bass. If you have the best sounding bass in the Universe those guys from ZANTAR 7 Sector .071748 are deadly AND they love bass. They will stop at nothing to obtain such an instrument of wrath.

I'm thinking I should ask them what kind of pickups they might suggest for my bass.
