Gents and others,
I'm about to put flatwound strings on one of my basses (first time stringing flatwounds since '77ish)
I'm hearing from sources that the new Fender 9050's have less tension than older Fender flatwounds.
That little, if any, truss rod adjustment is needed. Is this true?
I have two American Vintage reissue '62 Precisions (white and sunburst). On the sunburst I'm about to string flatwound 9050L's on it for a 60's Motown sound.
Am I about to make a mistake?
I hate necks coming off a bass for trussrod adjustment!
Chime in fast!

I think just restringing and perhaps a tweak of the set-up will do. Shouldn't be that big of a deal. when i say tweak, I mean string height.

String tension should be good, from what I've read here. Don't do Rotosound's, them on my Precision and was afraid of what they would do. Three days and they were gone.

Enjoy!

I like the 9050s. If you use the lights, 40-100, to replace a similar round, you should be fine. Should be, not will be, you still need to measure. If you go heavier you will likely need to adjust.

Good point. I always stay with the same gauge, so I never even thought about that. I do find string height to be a lot more critical on my fretless than my fretted basses. This was my first fretless bass, so I spent a lot of discovery time with it.

Maybe it's just me.

I used 9050M's on my Jaco bass for a long time,.....( I recently switched to 7250M's ....wanted to shake it up & try nickel plated rounds on my fretless) ...anyway 9050's are a good flatwound string you'll love 'em...... :)

Whenever you make a drastic string change such going from rounds to flats, always take your bass & new stringset to a luthier for instalation and total pro set-up. Don't whine about it. Just do it. All the smart bass players do.

I "chickened out" on putting them on my reissue '62.
I put the flats on my old '77 Precision (black, maple neck) because it needed a slight neck adjustment anyway.
My guitar tech only had to make a slight tweek to the truss rod.
My first notes after tuning..."My Girl"
I'm now Jamerson!
Flatwounds on my fingertips for the first time on an electric in 30-plus years...butter.
(I did play a standup a few years ago at a school function)

There is something special about flats on a P. Glad you like them.

Jamerson, and Duck Dunn, also used the La Bella 0760M "Deep Talkin' Bass" flats. Super cool strings but at .052-.110 put a lot of stress on the neck. I have a set on a 72 Tele. I think it was Brother Dave that said he quit using him after trashing two necks. Really nice sound and feel, but they push the envelope.

The 9050Ls are very nice and they do not overly stress the neck. I believe they come standard on some of the AV Ps. Pretty sure that is what came on my 57.

Yep.
The 9050 lights are 45...60...80...100.
I'm understanding it's the middle (A/D) strings that can warp a neck.
60 and 80 seem to be a friendly gauges.
I'm so into the flats now that I'll probably put a set on the sunburst '62 reissue and really pretend I'm Jamerson or Babbit or...

Glad to hear a happy end to the story. Don't forget the foam as a mute ala Mr. Jamerson and Mr. Babbit!

I don't have any problems using a set of strings with (G).50, (D).65, (A).85, and (E).105 gauges causing neck warpage.
