So far as I recall a 1989 USA P-Bass would be a screwdriver adjustment at the base of the neck mostly hidden by the body and not a hex key adjustment of any sort. Photos please? Or is this the MIJ one? Still I think the MIJ one was adjusted the same way, with a flat head screwdriver. Need more info and photos.

Truss rod nut replacement might not be necessary at all. Instead get the right sized one of these tools called a GRIPPER Truss Rod Wrench. Problem solved.

I honestly think that is your best shot at keeping this neck in the game.

a bass player... too lazy??? Never heard of such of a thing.

It's okay to use the wrong size wrench on a Squire but please don't when working on my USA. :D

Now there's a comment I like. Okay I said it and Linnen had the %$#@& to write it. NICE.

Sorry- I understand that a Squire could be a good way to get into bass playing. I mean that.

The image I posted of the GRIPPER TRUSS ROD WRENCH is not showing up. It is sold online by STEWMAC and that is the only place I know that has them. They come in 8 or 9 various sizes. I'd suggest you get one of those in the right size for a Squier of that year and origin and try it before you go replacing the truss rod nut. It gradually tapers from the original size scaling up until it grips.

Someone who is too lazy to get the right wrench probably is also too lazy to do a truss rod nut replacement. No offense, just stating the obvious. If you want the nut replaced I suggest you get it professionally done. I don't do truss rod work myself, mainly I just mod electronics on passives. I know how some of the truss rod repairs are done and you don't want to know all the labor involved. It require special tools and skills I don't have like variable temperature commercial grade heat guns, neck heat presses, etc. So, in the few cases where neck issues could not be corrected by adjusting the nut I sold the instrument rather than deal with the expense of fixing it right, which can be a substantial expense.

A luthier or bass tech is almost certainly going to charge more than a Squier instrument is worth to replace the truss rod nut, especially if they have to remove the fretboard or part of it. That is UNLESS it is one of the USA MADE 1989-90 SQUIER MODELS! In which case you just buggered up one of the most rare and collectible Squier instruments ever made. In that event I'd either fix or sell depending on how it sounds and the degree of emotional attachment.

Another option, which is probably doable for a lazy bassist is replacing the neck with one of the cheaper Fender licensed replacements. Just move the old hardware over to the new neck and then bolt the new neck on. I'd probably consider doing that on a Squier unless it was something special, like a rare 1989 USA made one. I'd most likely sell it "AS-IS" and disclose the buggered up hex nut.

Finally, there is a Squier Bass section. You might try posting on Squier basses there in the future. Just scroll down the board index to SQUIER BASSES. It is below AMPS and CUSTOM SHOP and PICKUPS on the index. Just keep scrolling down. Ahhhhh, there is the SQUIER BASS section! It is probably a good idea to keep Squier and Fender stuff separate, especially on technical questions because there are different solutions due construction differences between the two brands.
