I still need to find a 51 Precision, as we have a lot in common, but in the mean time my 52 (refinished unfortunately) arrived today. Tuned it and ran a scale, that's all the time for now, but it sounds better than I thought it would. I have to try another case on it because this one detunes the bass due to bad fit. Still, better than shipping without one. Anybody ever run across those old leather gig bags?

It's been a good week for Affprod.

The original gig bags were made of and early form of naghahyde so don't be looking for any leather gig bags if you want an original bag. Suffice to say most of the original bass bags did not age well due to the weight of the instruments that they were carrying.

A hard case is a good idea for an early '50s Fender bass even though it is not original.

You lucky dude. Pics appreciated...and if you happen to have a 40th Anniversary Precision..I'm sure we'd all like to see that, too.

I didn't know about the naghahyde.

I has always heard they were leather, very interesting. I thought it would be nice to have one to keep it period correct. Of course it would be stored and traveled in a hard case, as are all my basses. I have am empty SKB that may fit better, I will check that out.

Still want a 51, for more reasons that it being the first year, we have birthdays in common. I have a friend that has one. Sounds terrible or I think he would sell it to me. I told him I would take it anyway but he is like me, some basses just take you on trips through time. You just can't sell dreams and memories if it is not necessary.

No, no 40th Anniversary P. Through no conscious intent, I have four Precisions and four Jazz and one, P body w/J neck. So I guess I have four and a half of each. :D I enjoy all my other Fenders too, but let's face it, the P and the J have stood the test of time and are still the benchmark for the others to chase.

BC is right. There aren't many of the original bags surviving in usable condition and are too fragile to offer functionality. The vinyl broke down, cracked and crumbled and the handles pulled out.

There was an optional hard case and the Custom Shop was using a G&G repro of these early Fender bass cases a while back. They are not rectangular, but more of a body contoured shape. They were brown and only fit a 51/56 P-Bass. One of those would be great to luck into. The rectangular black Tolex G&G Precision Bass case works good also. The newer combo cases that work for both a P and a J don't seem to fit a 51 good at all with lots of slosh allowing the thing to move around too much.

The brown cases specific to fit the first generation P-Bass that were reissued by the Custom Shop are really hard to find now, but they look like this:

Steve, I thought you had at least one of every Fender four string bass from 1951 through 2001. No :?: :?: :?:

Thanks BD. I can pick up a Tolex but I like that idea of the CS contoured case. I have added that to my wish list.

Linin, I have one of each model made, not each year. I have a few extras in some cases, like Ps and Js, Performers, etc. that group photo is all but six of my basses, three of which are not Fenders.

Those original hard-shell cases for the Precision basses had the bass carried upside down in the case. It takes some getting used to, but they are very cool since the first Telecaster cases were the same design.

I don't have anywhere near every model Fender bass. When you add in Coronado and Performer basses, I doubt that I ever will.
I do have Precisions and Jazz basses from the first three decades of Fender and I have two Telecaster basses from the 60's and 70's, so I have nothing to complain about.
