They actually have string cutters? No wonder it takes so long and it's such a chore.Do you realize how long it takes to chew through an E string. That's the reason I quit playing 5 string basses.

Yeah but the trade off from chewing through all those strings is that it leaves you with sharp Teeth.......just like our Famed Canadian Beaver,...........Hey Oxfan,....the next time you're having a tasty Mooshead Lager after work be sure to tilt your bottle north to pay homage too.... & salute the greatCanadian Beaver,....... (hey there's a reason why the Beaver is on the Canadian Nickel)...& let's not forget the Moose is on the Quarter..

Yeah, I know! I get into trouble for speaking my mind, because i really am careful about, "biting my tounge".

Alas, I drank my last Moosehead, but, observed a moment of silence and thought of Canada.

Ha, you think you Canadians honor your beavers? I live in beaver County, and directly across the Beaver River, is the town of Beaver, just a few miles to the north, is the town of Beaver Falls.

Fair enough you're area of Pennsylvania has got my area in Canada beat in the Beaver Honor department ........actually we have more Black bears & mountain Lions (cougars) than beavers in my area & they're becoming a big concern ..... they're coming out of the mountains looking for food & rummage though people's garbage ....but I digress...now back to our topic,.......

Ernie Ball makes 2 battery operated drill type Peg Winders....I saw the Red one (in the fist link) at Long & McQuade Music last week..

I use the Dunlop one, but I got a low torque electric screwdriver and it works great--it winds fast but not too fast--and it doesn't overtighten if you use it in short bursts.

I know some of you play guitars, too. Not sure why, but that is another subject. I have a technogeek friend that says he has seen examples where a winder has actually worn circles in the headstock finish. Can't happen on a bass, too tall, but can it happen on guitar or is he just having fun with me.

You're going to use a winder made for the size of a 6 stringer to start with. A bass winder is to wide, and deep for a 6 stringer.

How about what's the longest you've gone without changing the strings on your bass or guitar? :P I think I might be headed towards the top there since it's been over three years (maybe even five) since I did for any instruments. Oddly enough, they're not in bad shape and not even corroded, even though I'm really bad about taking care of my guitars. I intend to change them pretty soon, since I have serious music work coming up, more so than the past, so I'll be putting more demands on my gear. I wind them by hand, too. The bass isn't so bad to do, but guitars are a pain in the arse, because the strings are much smaller. I really should invest in a winder. I friggin hate changing them, too.

My 74 P bass has had the same strings for 5+ years. It stays in the case. The strings don't sound bad. If I played it for a few days they'd probably go into hyper phase and rust overnight.

I've always liked bass strings best when they've been on for at least a month or two, but then they wind up staying on way too much longer. I've read that James Jamerson refused to ever change his strings, unless they broke. He said that "the dirt makes the funk."

I imagine getting strings for a doghouse must dent the wallet a bit. I think they go for over $100 a set, but I could be wrong. I haven't looked at the price of them in a long time.

Ouch! You can get a few of full sets of electric bass ones for that (probably even more if you buy those really cheap sets.) I tell you, that's one expensive instrument to play. Maybe you don't have to change them so often, though.
