While we're Yakin' about changing strings, how many players here use a winder, or restring by hand?

Most of the time I restring by hand,...... but last night while changing the strings on my Select Jazz Bass I unstrung each string with a winder & restrung each string by hand,.....it was 8PM after a long day at work & I was feeling a little lazy.... :)

Properly used, a winder is best.

I detune by hand and tune them back up with a string winder. Nothing worse than having the string pop off the post as you're tuning up!

And I change them one at a time unless I need to clean the fretboard which is rare (though the ebony boards on my Alembics get some lemon oil once a year which entails taking them all off...)

I restring by hand. I start with the "E", one string at a time. The BOSS TU-80 tuner works well for me. Image

You probably have wrists like steel!

Winders are great. Winding by hand takes so long that the string usually pops off or does something you don't want it to before you get it snug.

I like this Planet Waves winder.

I have that winder also, but I don't have strings popping off posts without using the winder.

Popov is a vodka http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popov_(vodka)

So if your strings Popov while you are winding them do drink more vodka. You may not remember changing strings so that when you awake to go to the gig you will exclaim #@%$^&! My Strings Changed Themselves!!!

Well I thought it was funny

They actually have string cutters? No wonder it takes so long and it's such a chore.

Do you realize how long it takes to chew through an E string. That's the reason I quit playing 5 string basses.

Yeah but the trade off from chewing through all those strings is that it leaves you with sharp Teeth.......just like our Famed Canadian Beaver,...........Hey Oxfan,....the next time you're having a tasty Mooshead Lager after work be sure to tilt your bottle north to pay homage too.... & salute the greatCanadian Beaver,....... (hey there's a reason why the Beaver is on the Canadian Nickel)...& let's not forget the Moose is on the Quarter..

Yeah- what he said. I used a winder in maybe 1982. It marred my tuners on my guitar so I never used one again. I've never had any problems winding by hand. That's a whole lotta winding. I'm pre - fast food generation . :D

The gears on my Telecaster Bass were really sticky - I think that put me off turning gears by hand for good! (they have since been fixed)

I seem to remember there was an attachment you could use with a drill so you could REALLY turn those thing FAST! So fast that Dan Erlewine or someone like that recommended not using them because it was too easy to overtighten...
