O.K., I'm done whining, thank you for listening!

Changing strings is fun and easy for myself. When I was a young beginner was when I first struggled at changing strings. Along the way it gets easier to do. The more you do it the quicker you will pick it up! I hope you do change one string at a time! If you're not then you shock your neck! That might be the reason maybe? A well setup guitar is not hard to change strings and get back to tuning on. It might shift on you a bit while playing after worth but, in no time at all those strings should be settling in just fine. I've seen people do weird string stretch things that appear to traumatize their guitar more than help with string changing. Beware of bad funky advice!

No matter what string set you have setup on your instrument or how often you change them, STICK TO THE SAME SET!

I have to agree with Brother Dave's comment. If you have a particular make and model string that is acceptable to you, keep using it. Replace the strings one at a time with the same set, a setup is unlikely, although I find myself checking anyway. Why make extra work? Especially when you may not like the sound or feel of the new string.

I am a firm believer, that if you want to try out a new string....buy a new bass.

Simple.

Elegant.

MasterCard.

Oxfan- what a coinkydink - I changed 3 sets of guitar strings over 3 days and I have 2 basses to do. I usually take all the strings off at once and put the new ones on- I don't adjust the necks just the saddles if need be. The guitars stay in my cave and the temp is usually the same year round. That may have something to do with my never really needing to adjust the necks. In fact my gigging basses are the same way. I think the adjustment thing is more of a climate (where one lives) thing... maybe? I have occasionally tweeked a neck here and there. 8)

I've used and use the same kind and guage strings on all my guitars and basses forever as long as I've had them.. I don't like change. Rotosound 45-105 for bass and Ernie Ball green pkg 10's for gweetar.

I've always liked GHS, and Ernie Ball strings. There is one other brand that I won't mention because I don't want to give the surprise away.

Always 45-105.

When I say I'll be obcessing and tweaking and spending the whole afternoon, it will be taking my time, carefully doing everything, so as not to accidentally scratch up the finish. I have never put a mark on any of my basses, that I bought new, outside of a couple light dings on the headstocks, which aren't evident, they're mint.

Now do we remember that we are talking to the King Of Covers? They're on everything! If I could get them for my cats, I probably would!

When I pull the bridge covers, it's tedious so as not to enlarge the holes by constantly taking screws in and out.

As mentioned earlier, time is something I don't have a lot to spare. There's always make up crap to do when i get a rare day oo, and priorities over ride fun.

Take the covers off and throw them in the trash where they belong. Duck Dunn taught us this in the 50's. You must need a refresher course. Sting (always the over achiever) learned this so well that he also took off his pickguard and threw it away! Magna $@! Laude.

More dreaded than changing strings on a bass is changing strings on one of my ukuleles. Uke string changes, especially the loops and tucks of the strings at the bridge take a certain knack that I have yet to master. Firmly anchoring slick synthetic strings to a ukulele bridge reminds me a lot of making a wallet in arts and crafts at summer camp. The counselor can show you how to do it and it looks easy and fun, but when you try it using the same exact materials your wallet comes out looking like it got ran over by a tractor trailer at 70 MPH. I'd rather do string changes on five Fender electric basses than one ukulele. I'd just rather pay for the ukulele strings.

I've never had the pleasure of the joys of a ukulele, and after hearing this, I probably never will. :D

Yep all it takes is one song or one phenomenal player to attract you to an instrument. There was this one geezer mandolin player who doubled on steel in the next county over. Used to go see a band he was in just to see this guy. His Gibson F electric mandolin really cuts through and he was very skilled at both steel and mandolin. He got me thinking about mandolin too.

I've always liked the Mandolin & The Pedal steel,.........David Gilmour of Pink Floyd Fame can make the Pedal Steel sing,.......I believe his pedal steel if a Fender,....Fender used to make them back in the day.... :)

I wish strings would change themselves as well.

Probably my least favorite part of playing guitar & bass.

While we're Yakin' about changing strings, how many players here use a winder, or restring by hand?
I restring by hand. I start with the "E", one string at a time. The BOSS TU-80 tuner works well for me. Image
