I have three new sets of strings that need to go on. If I start, it will be hours before I get done, as I'll be tweaking and turning and obcessing. It's not easy being me sometimes.

O.K., I'm done whining, thank you for listening!

I hear ya Ox,......They can put a man on the moon but they've yet to invent a bass that changes it's own strings,........I changed the strings on my Jaco bass last week & I realized half way through changing them that I bought the wrong gauge.....(not one of my finer moments) I ran into the music store as they were closing only seeing .45 & .65 on the package..so I grabbed them thinking they were Fender 7250M 105-45 & they were Fender 7250ML 100-45.....DOH!!! First time I've ever done this in 35 yrs of playing bass ......anyway My Jaco sounds nice wiith nickel plated rounds,......(I've been using Fender 9050M flats on it since I bought it) ....... Now at some point probably later today I'll be changing the strings on my Select Jazz Bass.. :) it never ends....

I only have a window of opportunity to make up for all the time work interferes with life. I just can't do anything to my basses halfway (o.k. I did use velcro to put the covers on Bebe, but it works). It has to be right, and I'm anal about having it right.

There, now you got me whining again!

No matter what string set you have setup on your instrument or how often you change them, STICK TO THE SAME SET! If you do that and change the strings one at a time you will only have very minor adjustments to make, if any at all. Pulling all the strings off at once about guarantees you'll be making neck adjustments and that the intonation will almost always change. Changing to an entirely different set requires a complete ground-up setup. My instruments go years and years with no neck adjustments at all and only very minor saddle tweaks by changing strings one at a time and always using the exact same string set. I honestly do not change my strings often at all. I hate doing it! LOL

I hate changing strings too, but I also get kind of obsessive about it - sometimes I get overcome with the urge - no, the NEED - to change them. Thanks Brother Dave though for the caution - it's good to remember that changing strings is going to result in necessary adjustments. The GHS flats on my Duck Dunn felt really gunky so I immediately thought, "hey maybe I can try those DR Legend flats" - but I'm going to wait until AFTER the gig next weekend! (If I change them at all, probably just need to clean 'em off with rubbing alcohol...)

I think the zing of new strings hides the real sound of the bass. I'd rather hear, "your bass sounds great", instead of "your strings sound great". You eventually have to change them though, when they start slipping out of tune all the time.

Changing them one at a time is great advice. Bend a stick back and forth...it weakens the stick, right?

For the record...23 years and I've never snapped a bass string.

I have always changed strings a string at a time. I go from G to E, but I don't know why. Just do. I have come to adore DR Neons as a supurb sounding and very long lasting roundwound. The coating reduces the deaded string screech of roundwounds and makes for smoother and easier playability. Kinder to your fingers. Some folks hate the feel of the coating, but I think it's the cat's pajamas. And they look absolutely fabulous unlike those fugly naked steel strings {blech!}.

I always stick with the same gauge, not necessarily the same brand. I will tell you that the Precision and the jazz will be adorned with GHS M3045's, and Bebe will be getting something special. I'm not mentioning what she's getting because someone here will run naked into the woods when he hears.

Now back to our show! I always change one string at a time AND have never really had to do anything. I did some minor tweaking a while ago, and have decided to do an ultra conservative set-up with the strings so low on a perfectly straight neck, it will be ridiculous.

Being that it's 7:17PM, and the day is shot, I guess the strings won't get changed for awhile.

Stay tuned!

Leave it to John. Rumor has it that he NEVER drove. He had someone to drive him and his dogs around.

It would be good enough to get you to the gig and back wouldn't it? Looks like it would hold plenty of gear. You and Fenton could take turns driving and barking.
