Tune to pitch--- capo on first fret--- hold down E string at 12th fret -- gap under string @ 5th --7th fret = .0015. You can use a straight edge also. Adjust truss to provide the right gap under the strings.

This is a basic -starting point kind of thing- maybe it will help someone. Check your gap- improve the playability of your bass- get better action.

This can help determine problems with the neck like "heel up" and high frets ( which is more common than I thought once I started working on OP's guitars.)

Does anyone adjust thier bass like this?
:)

As long as the truss rod is well adjusted and my neck has the proper amount of concave curvature, I do all the minor string height and pick up height adjustments myself to feel and to ear. Not to ruler. I don't care about 64ths. Be they inches or notes. I'm a tweeker. Slow small well considered tweeks. Then live with them. Sometimes for weeks.

After some three months or so, I've finally got those damned GHS Precision flats dialed in and balanced out. What an ordeal those buggers have been! But I do love the sound; the incredible attack & purcussiveness, decent sustain, and smooth overall playability. They also stay in tune better than any string I've ever played.

Plus, I don't think my Precision has ever played better! :D I've outdone myself.

Are you sure it was the strings and not the bass? Glad you got them to work though - I think I was one of the ones recommending them...

I'm thinking I might put the DR Legends on my bass that is currently strung with the GHS flats - wish me luck! I have to admit, I go by feel too. Never figured out the technique that sv is describing. I know it can't be that hard but I've just never gotten to the point where I went through that process.

No, it's the strings. They were sooooo unbalanced that I called GHS, and they told me they would balance out "in about a month". These are also they very highest tension strings I've ever played. When I asked for their tension figures they politely declined, so the numbers must be frighteningly high.

As for the bass, I happen to own the very best Fender Precision on the planet. There are none better.

I love DR strings, and have never had a bad set. Had I not gone with GHS Precision Flats, I would have chosen DR Legends. So I don't think you're going to need 'luck', hieronymous.

I used to be a touchy, feely kind of bass adjuster. There's nothing wrong with that. But I read the Dan Earlewine book and started
considering the mechanics. I still remained adjusting by eye and feel with some measurements thrown in to start. I'm still like that. BUT the thing is that I thought I had my bass all set up and right on. I thought I was pretty good at it. THEN my buddy the luthier took it and set it up and BINGO- OOPs! I got knocked down a notch !! HA! The bass was budda meng!!! He dun did his thang on it . He clued me in a little on how he does it. Of course there are other things to consider. Like string height to start the set up. So I'm going around my basement setting things up a bit. Trying to make all things better with my basses. I'm discovering the need for some fret leveling and I'm learning more as I go. All is good. :D
