Hi all

I bought a 1998 Fender CIJ '57 re-issue from a guy on Gumtree (perhaps the Australian version of Craigslist).

I have to say, that I didn't even consider the existence of fake Fenders - this is how new I am. I am now learning fake Fenders are a big issue.

I would appreciate opinions on the authenticity of this P-bass. I have checked the internet and, based on what I can see, I might be safe - I would appreciate opinions none-the-less.

Thank you.

The detailed photos are in this link (not sure how to put them in the message)

Looks real to me. I don't see anything that screams counterfeit to me. Most fakes that I have seen have been blatantly obvious and very clumsily done. Yours looks good.

This bass deserves an extra Jazz pickup in the bridge!

Chromey, stop it! LOL! It is fine.

That is NOT a 57 RI. It is a standard production P-Bass. It is a genuine Crafted in Japan Fender Japan bass made by Fuji-Gen at Matsumoto which made all the Fender Japan basses through 2009. It is genuine Fender Japan, but it is positively not a 57 RI. Fender Japan vintage reissues have different serial letters from standard production. "O" serials are normal mass production instruments made between 1997 and 2000. Besides the pickguard is wrong and the tug bar is missing plus the headstock decal doesn't look right. Not a 57, but a Fender Japan P-Bass.

Oh, it's just a matter of taste and a mere point of view. :)

The main reason for slapping an extra Jazz pickup in the bridge is versatility.

And a really nice looking one, too.

Yes - I love it. I am in the office working and I just want to stare at it. My financial model is going no where!

Thank you for all the feedback - makes me feel better. I think I got a good deal - got the guy at a weak moment with a cash offer during the footy on Friday night.

The comment on the pick-ups is interesting: are there any standard modifications to these guitars?

New pick-ups? I'd love a thumb rest also.

Wouldn't the P guard be 2 ply or whatever if it were a std Japan P ? Or did they make them (std J issues) with 1 ply p guard over there?

The tuners aren't vintage type tuners like a 57 would have- the stems on the keys would be longer and the barrels are fatter ( bigger holes in headstock) and the tuner plates are larger on V type.

Did someone put a strap button on the back of the HS ? Maybe?

Maybe someone just wanted to have a bass that kind of resembled a vintage Fender?

If you disassemble this one it probably says P57 in pencil on the neck. They all do. Don't know why. Also if it was a 57 RI it should have an anodized metal guard and the tug bar would be there as there is one and it has both features. This isn't one of those.

There are several levels of Fender Japan instruments and two of those levels are not imported to the USA. I can't explain the one ply guard.

I really like the pickup used in the discontinued Fender 62 Reissue P-Bass, I have one of those pickups. I love it. It is called the Fender Original Vintage Precision Bass Pickup. It is very full range yet plenty loud enough without overwinding. It doesn't sound like a modern one at all. The tone control does a lot with that pickup it did not do with the stock pickup. Fender Part 0992046000. If you want a full range P-Bass tone it is fantastic.

I bet 90% or better of people that order custom wound pickups order them overwound. Sure they are loud, but they just don't have any upper mids the Fender Original Vintage one has. I like it a lot.

I certainly would not route this and add a Jazz pickup at the bridge. I'd put the Vintage one in it. It sounds BETTER than a Jazz pickup because it is noise free.

I think this would have had the metal plate to which you refer though it has been removed - the holes are there in the appropriate places (either side of the pick-ups).
