Hello all

I am trying to replace the output jack ferrule and all related parts involved on a newly aquired Fender '51 Reissue Precision bass.

I know this model is discontinued and I have searched Fender's site as well as the forum. I did find a replacement ferrule with related parts for a Telecaster, which looks similar.

Question is will that Telecaster part work for me? I am primarily a Jazz guy but this "new" '51 P rocks!

Thanks

This is an issue that comes up frequently, so don't feel like The Lone Ranger. The same parts are used as the Telecaster guitar yes. These things are a PAIN to replace and require either four hands and three tools simultaneously (with no guarantee you aren't going to mess it up big time) OR a $19 specialized tool that allows one person to replace it in the original factory correct manner 100% of the time. The retainer clips are so problematic without this tool that there is actually an aftermarket replacement jack mount device called an ELECTROSOCKET that completely chucks all the factory original type parts except the Switchcraft jack itself.

Read this page about the issue before you try to remove that old jack mount and the retainer clip. http://www.stewmac.com/tsarchive/ts0004.html

NOTES: If you remove the clip wrong you can gouge the jack cavity so much that a new clip won't grab on correctly even when installed perfectly. You are in for big trouble if you gouge out the channel because even if you do everything right or use the specialized Tele Jack Installation Tool it won't work because there isn't enough wood left in the cavity for the clip to grab onto. The $9 ELECTROSOCKET device is an ideal replacement jack mount, but you will have to drill two pilot screw holes for it, which makes it less attractive to purists. However an Electrosocket device is possibly the best do-it-yourself solution if you don't want to buy the $18 Tele Jack Replacement Tool, and if you want it to last for the life of the instrument.

The 51 RI is a modern incarnation of my favorite design and differs substantially in tone and feel from everything that came after, but the jack mounting part of the design is definitely the one bugaboo in it for any sort of user maintenance. Even skilled techs dread messing with them unless they have the correct replacement tool. It is darn near impossible to replace the jack mount using ordinary hand tools unless you are very good and very very very lucky.

Dave, thank you. Thank you.
I eyed the procedure for the last 3 days and did not see any easy way but was not aware of the dangers of damaging this bass until I just read your post. Priceless info on your part.

I am falling in love with this bass (odd to me consider I own 7 jazz basses) and would like to NOT mess this up.

I understand the string ferrule size, mango-ish color(it's a later model) and electronics are not exact to the originals but I would still like to keep this original type of jack ferrule. I would actually like to mod this bass to make her much closer to an original. I read an old post where you suggested a capacitor change and I just happen to have a Sprague paper-in-oil 0.047 in my spares box.

I have decided to purchase the Stewmac tool for this procedure. Thanks again for that info and if you ever run into this issue I would be happy to drop it in the mail and send it your way.

Brother Dave, thank you again and I hope to hear this beast thumpin' again soon!

With the tool it will be much easier and glad you are going that way. Do let us know how it goes. Those jack mount clips are a booger.

I'm a little late to the party, but I have a '51 RI that I installed an Electrosocket in. No further problems. I'm not anal about originality (the bass also has a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound pickup and a four-saddle bridge) and the modification makes it a more practical gigging bass.

Thanks-- yeah I think that would be a good way to go,especially if the bass was gigged heavily. This one is not and I wanted to keep it as close to an original (just bought some bakelite saddles for it). My Jazz basses do all the heavy gigging at this time. As much as I want to keep it looking like an original '51, I have heard great things about the Seymour Duncan Quarter pounder for this bass. Very tempting. Maybe I'll throw the pickup cover on it to hide the SD!

I have to say being a Jazz bass man, I think this Precision rocks. It has started turning my head toward P-basses lately.
