Gibson doesn't seem to go to far with basses for players. You either like them, or you don't.

I just got to not liking them anymore. I'll play a Precision, or a 4003.

Or, a fretless Jazz with a black glass sparkle pickguard equipped with D'Addario ETB92 Nylon Tapewound Strings! :D

I think the worst Gibson bass I ever tried was a Firebird. What a P.O.S! It had absolutely no note definition whatsoever. Just a huge never ending mountain of mud. No amount of amp tweaking could make it passable as an actual musical instrument. I said this thing's gotta be broken or something. The guy said no that's how they sound. I just shut up and handed it back and made a mental 'note-to-self'.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I'm really glad you like the Nylons adding to the overall awesome Jazz you put together. :D

The one thing I noticed about the EB0 / SG Std. bass Gibsons with Humbuckings, the factory strings don't make it. As I think some one just said, "What a P.O.S!". Very well put. 8) One other thing I did do to get a better sound out of a Gibson, amp settings; high power, and heavy on the Gain. Treble backed way down, Mid High the same. Mid Low about at 12 o'clock, and about 9-10 on the Bass setting. Lower Volume setting on the bass guitar, and a high Bass tone on the bass guitar. The necks just aren't comfortable to play on.

The strings fit her perfectly, Bebe is an anomaly, she is unique in so many ways. I still haven't seen another bass, or guitar for that matter with a black glass sparkle pickguard it was love at first sight.

I heard that you have a new project!

Bebe certainly is a one of a kind, personalized to your taste.
I won't be the least bit surprised if you haven't started a trend with the Black Glass Sparkle pg. Looks great. I can see others doing the same, if not in black then some other color.

Gibson basses are idiosyncratic - don't lump them all together, especially vintage ones vs. new. Fenders (especially the Precision) are very consistent and dependable. Gibsons are kooky and often not particularly flexible.

I gotta say, I love my early-'70s Les Paul Triumph - it can even get a Precision-y sound. I don't think I will ever get rid of this bass - I have a history with it, and it really works for different stuff

Mr. Nylon, just glad you can zero in on what you do and don't like! Personally, I like switching between different basses, I like different electronics, different scale lengths, different neck profiles - keeps me on my toes and I play differently on the different instruments.

I don't know - I feel like I don't fit in and I'm going through a lot of stress right now - one of my cats is having major health issues - but I don't mean to bring your thread down! Welcome back to P-Land!!!

Also, I wonder if the bad playability of your SG bass was related to the neck dive? The strain of holding up the neck affecting playability? I can see how that could be a problem. The Les Paul Triumph is so body-heavy there's no possibility of neck dive! But it actually sits very comfortably on a strap.
