Im not collecting it for that value i just see a bunch of stories on guys who keep that closet classic and have it around for forever just thought it would be a nice bass to keep prestine i got my other fenders to beat up but hard to keep my hands off the bass its quality made despite its not a MIA

The Steve Harris P-Bass is a very well made in Japan Fender Bass, ..... I feel the same way about my MIJ Marcus Miller Bass & my CIJ (Crafted in Japan) Geddy Lee Jazz Bass
All 3 basses are solid ........We've had this debate on the forum & I don't want to get it started again but there are some people who regard Japanese Fender's as being on par with (or better than in some cases) American made Fender Basses,... overall though the Quality rating is America Fender's come in first for Quality & then it's Made in Japan & Mexican made Fenders come in at a very close 3rd ( Fender's Mexican plant in Ensanada has really upped the quality control in recent years & many former made in Japan Fender models are now made in Mexico ....... I have American, Japanese, & Mexican made Fender's & I like them all ......... Tamy75 don't let any one tell you how you have to enjoy your Steve Harris P-Bass as it's for you to decide if you want to gig with it or just keep it in your home to jam with........ I have a Fender Select Jazz bass that will rarely ever leave the house.....so there ya go.. :)

I think I have chatted about this subject before, so feel free to ignore this post.

As I started to accumulate basses, I felt much like others. "Oh, this is too nice to gig with". Although I have always played every bass I have owned, the majority never left home. In fact, when I moved to Florida in January of 2002, I bought a pair of Ibanez SR500s to gig with so I wouldn't have to take my wonderful Fenders out in Florida's coastal salt air. If I were twenty years old, that would still be a good decision. But I am not twenty, and I have had a couple medical issues that came close to closing my account. I now look at my basses in a totally different way. I want to share them with everybody. I feel ife is too short to keep them for just for looking at. You guys know I picked up a really nice P Bass a couple months ago. I have not gigged with that one, but I did take it to a practice. It is going to end up in a glass display box - but even then I will still play it once in awhile, and who knows, maybe someday I will gig it.

It is a personal thing, different to everyone. I forget who I had this discussion with last time, but he was playing some rough joints. Okay, that makes a difference. There are probably a number of exceptions that need to be considered. I play for fun, usually nice places, and I take whatever bass will fit the playlist and be enjoyable for me, regardless of age, value and collectability. Heck I played my AV57P on a small boat in the ocean. A couple years ago that would have broken me out in a cold sweat, just before I passed out completely.

Maybe it is age. But I want to use my collection, enjoy it, let others enjoy it. No one in my family is interested in them. I am not going to abuse them, I take excellent care of my instruments, but I am going to get enjoyment from them.

And that is my sermon for today.

Honestly, there are only two signature models that I would love to own one day. The Steve Harris and Pino Palladino basses. No doubt.

I've yet to try a Pino Palladino P-Bass but with it being from the Custom Shop I'm sure it's a sweet unit..

Fender got it right in the early 90's with the introduction of the first signature model bass. The Stu Hamm signature bass was called the Urge. The original Urge basses were 32" scale, active/passive, stacked pickup knobs, toggle switch and a control knob. If you couldn't find a sound that worked for your taste then the control knob also has a position to turn the bass off.

I was able to recently complete my collection of Urge 1 basses (4 colors). The bass in the center is one of a handful of prototypes made personally for Stu Hamm. He signed the pick guard on this one which was finished in a special gray burst color.

I tried out a Pino Palladino P-Bass a couple of years ago. Simply put, it was the best Precision that I've ever played. I generally find P-Bass necks a bit chunky, but this one felt amazing in my hands. The body was super light. And the tone was fantastic! Unfortunately the price tag places it out of reach for me. Plus, the Fiesta Red finish is a bit of a turnoff. Sorry Fender, I don't really dig the spanish tile look when it comes to instrument finishes. And in certain lighting it looks pink. Eh. So to the fine folks at the Fender Custom Shop, if you ever get Pino to consent to offering it in different finishes (black or 3TSB come to mind), then I might have to scrape up the cash to get one.

As for my own Fender signature instruments? I've been playing my Roscoe Beck V signature since about 1999, and it is fantastic! The versatility in the pickup switching makes it one of the most tonally diverse instruments I've ever played. It's just unfortunate that the bass is no longer in production.

Yes it was very unfortunate indeed,.... The Roscoe Beck V bass was discontinued 3-4 yrs ago around the same time that Fender also dropped the Steve Bailey 6 string bass, the Victor Bailey 4 & 5 string basses & the Victor Bailey acoustic bass,.....& The Made in Korea 24 fret Jazz bass just to name a few..........I know Fender was tight for cash around this time & went Public on the stock market not long after from what I understand....

Actually, Fender backed out of going public. An IPO had been tentatively announced late last year, but Fender thought better of it and remains a privately held company.

As for the Roscoe Beck V being pulled from the lineup, that happened back in 2005. Rumblings that I've heard about it being discontinued have to do with the Gotoh bridge no longer being available, and that was a deal breaker with Roscoe. According to an interview I read with him, he and the development folks at Fender had been going back and forth on prototypes of his signature bass for some time. Something about the instrument wasn't sitting right with Roscoe, and he couldn't approve the bass. But when the developers put on the Gotoh bridge the tone of the bass really came together, and at that point the instrument got greenlit by the artist for production. And when that bridge was no longer available, Roscoe wasn't prepared to stand behind the 5 string version of the instrument.

....At least, that's my understanding of the situation.

Thanks for the info, I never knew this.....Re: Fender deciding not to go public & the bridge issue on The Roscoe Beck V ........interesting stuff on both accounts,.. :) & The Roscoe Beck was discontinued in 2005? wow how time flies .....(I thought it was later)

The 5 string version was discontinued in 2005. The 4 string version was produced for at least another couple of years.
