For all of those who have helped, thank you! I looked in Fender's Library on this site and found the price guide from 2007. Found the bass and it is a Black & Chrome P Bass Special and it says:

The Squier Black & Chrome P Bass Special features a traditional split single-coil P Bass pickup in the middle position plus a J Bass pickup in the bridge position, mirrored pickguard and knurled chrome control knobs. Available in Black (506) with black-painted headcap.

I do not have the option of the black headcap of course. MSRP was $415.99

Now that leads me to a question, do these gain value over time, or is it just certain kinds? Mines a lefty and it is hard to come by anymore I guess.

Thanks again!

WOW!

You have certianly done your research well, Diana! You have been super-blesssed. Yes, this is quite a rare catch indeed, so congratulations are in order. :D

This is the only factory made P/J lefty that I've ever seen. I didn't think Fender had ever made any of those. There can't have been that many leftys made. You could call Fender Customer Relations with your serial number and see what they know about it from their private data banks. See if you can request an official document with all the intel on your bass.

Anyway you have a very special and rare lefty bass (literally  ) coming to you. It should play well with that factory Jazz neck on a Precision body. And sound good too. You should be able to play in a bar band professionally with that bass without modifications.

Usually a used Squier is worth about half the original sale price, not the original list for years. Some Squiers, very few though, have seen some value boosts. The Made In Japan E-series for example.

Being lefty makes it desirable only to left handed players which limits the resale market for this instrument since 90% of people play righty. Maybe somewhere there is someone collecting left handed Squiers or someday there will be. At any rate, I doubt it will see a value increase in your lifetime that would double what you paid for it.

Could be wrong, I've been wrong before.

I got my baby! I had been waiting all week to get her and she is finally here! Fits me so much better than my last bass. I got the whole package now (still waiting on the cable and picks to get here), Fender: Rumble 15 amp, padded gig bag, stand, padded leather strap - moto style, picks, Gold Premium 12' bass cable, and some flatwound light strings. Once everything is here I will take a photo. Spent just under $300 for it all.

Already have started practicing with my fingering. I really really wish the cable was here...not good enough to play anything acousitcally and tell if I have it in tune or not. Didnt get a tuner - learned how to do it with the 5th fret before and thought I should try again. Do have an app on the phone to double check myself.

I am so excited! Thanks again everyone for your help. Photos soon!!!

Diana

Oh - anything else you may think of I should have or have on hand?

Super Groovy!

Yes, you are going to want a good tuner.

Until you have your own tuner, I use this online application:

http://www.tunemybass.com/

It tunes all basses, up to 6 strings. I select 4 strings, then go to the CUSTOM TUNINGS and select the SINE WAVE option. Then go back to the ONLINE TUNER tab. Hover the cursor over the string you want to tune and you hear a sine wave of the note. I find the sine wave the easiest to tune by.

Tuning to standard tuning is essential for playing along to anything recorded. However you'll find that in the production process on a small portion of recorded music that the recordings were messed with in post-production to speed them up. One good example is "Take It Easy" by the Eagles. It it hard to find the lone issue of the version that wasn't sped up about 2%. Also some bands over the past 5 years or so have started drop tuning everything. But for 98% of pre-recorded music, standard tuning works fine.

I found it at BrotherDave's bass site. Lots of nifty little links on the site. You have to plunder around to find them. That one is on the PRACTICE AND RECORDING SOFTWARE page. I seriously use it for home practice right through my studio computer. The SINE WAVE tone is so easy to tune to.
