I believe this is a Squire PBass Special Black and Chrome Sp. Edition - It is stamped Standard on it though. I paid $150 for it. What do you think?

Welcome fellow lefty bassist. Good first post. Congratulations are in order as you're lucky to find a P/J factory configured lefty as Squier only makes lefty Jazz basses now. I don't think Fender ever offered a P/J lefty. A Buck-Fifty was a fair price as long as the bass is in very good condition with no issues.

Oh, and just so you'll know there is a Squier Bass Forum down in the bassment.

Thank you so much! I never thought it was a J/P. I am so very very new to this. Had a Squire many years ago that I got at Guitar City as a gift and it was the most basic cheapest model. Fiddled around a little but it was a righty and I think that may have been why I just never was comfortable. This time I did some more research and found I should have had a lefty and started my search.

Finding a lefty is like digging for gold. I checked out Craig's List and found a lefty Yamaha with amp for $175 but I did like my Squire and kinda wanted to stick with it. So when I saw this one on EBay I though what the heck. He was asking 280 for it so I submitted 150 as a make an offer. I was surprised when he took it! Thats when I started to think I made a mistake. It is listed as used-excellent condition. I should have research more before I submitted, but I liked how it looked and really never thought he would take such a low offer.

I did find that it is a Cort made in 2007 Indonesia. I also found they are not making them anymore. I was confused on the Standard vs Special since it has the bridge pickup - am I correct in that? Is it a Standard Special? Or is it one or the other? I found wiring diagrams which said it is the Black and Chrome Sp. Edition.

What makes it a J/P? Does it have the thinner jazz neck? That would be nice cause us girls have smaller hands :D

I appreciate all your help. I just an kinda obsessed in knowing exactly what I have so I am truthful in explaining to others. I KNOW I should have done it before I bought it. Impulse buy as I liked the look of it.

I think you did the right thing by pouncing on this right away. From what I can see in your photos your bass looks to be in good shape. The 'P/J' configuration comes from P for Precision and J for Jazz. It refers to the pickups. Here read this and then you'll know more. http://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=87311

I'm not an expert in model names or when certain models first came out, but there are folks here that are. So be patient.

Take a ruler or tape measure and measure the width at the nut. The nut is the off white synthetic piece where the fretboard starts and holds the strings in place. If it's 1.5" it's Jazz width.

How does your bass play for you? Easy? Is the neck straight? How is the sound? Good? Are the strings dead or alive?

I just bought it and do not have it in my hands yet. Worried about the shipping and all goes well. I wont expect it till the end of the week really. Sending UPS. I figure I should get new strings right away since who knows how old they are. Any recommendations?

I did find the Squire board and posted there! Asked basically the same questions. Going to go read the link now, thank you for it!!!

The one in the thread had the pickups at close to the bridge that looked split. Is that just that bass? That isnt stock so it is not just one piece like mine?

OK Diana. A thorough inspection of the bass is called for just as soon as the bass arrives.
Find a good guitar technician, and have him/her give you a professional evaluation of its condition and what it may need.

I'm going to recommend putting on Fender Flatwound strings. They are easy on your fingers and they will last as you learn to play. Get the technician to give you a professional set-up and instal your new strings for you as part of the set-up package deal.

If you need help/guidance with bass amp selection, pop on down to the bass amp forum. 8)

You have a split Precision bass pickup in the middle of the body in what looks to be the standard Precision location, and then you have a Jazz bass pickup (single straight) close to the bridge. This is a really nice combination that will give you good tone and sonic versatility. :)

Thank you for your kindness and help with my new baby. I will look for someone to go over it thoroughly as soon as I get it. My brother-in-law was actually in a band that cut a record. Didnt go far but I am proud of him. My next door neighbor is also a musician in a thrash metal band known locally. I know they are not techs but they can give a good first eval and thoughts on it.

Oh I am so very excited! Gonna have a hard time waiting for it to arrive. Will have all my accessories before it gets here.

Any thoughts on pick vs non? I didnt before but dont know if it would help. I always thought bass players didnt use them until I was looking to buy and all these 'kits' had them included.

Suggestion on hand strengthening?

BTW - with your help and photos under the jazz bass section I figured out why it is a combo. The split one on top and the straight one on the bottom like you said. Doesnt seem to be a lot of them out there, and even fewer lefties. Wow!

Those photos are what everyone asking to have something ID'ed here should try to replicate. Focused, clear, and detailed.
