I just purchased a '62 Precision Bass from the widow of one of my best friends. He played the hell out of his P-Bass for over 50 years. The bass has been refinished, but frankly, even the second finish coat has worn through as it reflects the life it has experienced.

I would like to send this bass to the factory for restoration to its original state & finish while retaining all of the original electronics, body, neck, fingerboard & hardware.

Has anyone ever done this & what is your recommendation? Who do I contact? What are the pros & cons?

I hate to tell you this, but Fender does not do factory restoration at all. :(

There are several excellent experts here that will give you all the pertinent intel you need. Just be patient.

For a vintage Fender restoration of a Pre-CBS instrument Gord Miller is tops in the world. He ain't fast and he ain't cheap but he is widely regarded as the best. One guy working alone saving one instrument at a time is a slow process.

If you want a decent refinish quickly and for cheap, Mark Jenny does good work for the money.

Gord Miller's turn around is months. Mark Jenny's turn around is weeks. On a pre-CBS instrument I'd strongly consider springing the extra money and waiting the extra time for Gord Miller but I think you'll be well served either place. It depends on how vintage correct you want the refinish to be and how big a budget you have for the project.

I list other refinishing options on my website, but Curtis Novak is not taking restoration work at this time so he can concentrate on his pickup business. Pity because he was as good as Gord Miller. Links to some of the services may have changed since I last edited that page but if you search on the name of the service you will find the updated link. Mark Jenny has changed his website since I posted his link. I can't edit that page right now due lightning strike on my main computer, so apologies for any dead links. Just do a google search to find their new link.

For REALLY cheap you can check around with area auto body shops, but on a Pre-CBS instrument I would NOT go there. You need a nitro refin job and hardly any body shops will shoot nitro anymore.
