I believe the '98-99 California Special series is a P/J bass with a jazz neck. I love mine!

The California P-Bass Special was made in 1997 and discontinued in 1999. It was replaced by the MIM Deluxe version that year. This model eventually turned into a huge-sounding active beast in 2004.

A Hot-Rodded American P-Bass not dissimilar to the MIM Deluxe P-Bass Special was also introduced, with features such as a graphite-reinforced maple neck and hotter pickups.
Discontinued in 2002.

I can't believe I am the only one that knows about this bass. It is a Precision body and a Jazz neck. Active pickups and only $700 to boot.

I ended up getting an American P special. I did say specifically in my original post that I didn't want the Deluxe P :P

That bass isn't an American deluxe, it is made in Mexico and has a P/J pickup configuration.

 There's always the exact opposite with the Mark Hoppus bass = A Precision neck on a Jazz body! And no worries about the tone circuit as there isn't any! Why did they even bother with a volume control?

My apologies, at the time of my OP the American Deluxe had the narrow neck, it doesn't now? Anyway FWIW I wanted Made in USA passive standard P (no J pup, no extra controls or anything) with a J neck.

Although the Ameri P special has the same nut width as a standard P, I found the shallower profile surprisingly very comfy. So I went with that.

While I'm at it, I may as well mention the Nate Mendel P which I tried because it's commonly mentioned for "P w/J neck requests" in that it has a slimmer neck and is more J like. I didn't like the one I tried, The finish on the neck was opposite of what I like. The shape of the neck didn't feel good. Acoustically (didn't try plugged in) it felt and sounded crappy, take that with a grain of unplugged salt.

For someone who wants an active PJ in a P body and J neck, the P Deluxe looks ideal.

The Mark Hoppus bass, is great for someone who wants a P with J body? They must be out there.

I'm happy with what I have now. If Fender ever present the exact thing I asked for, my GAS will ignite.

I have a Jazz with a P neck. It sounds different than a Jazz or a P-- close to both but it has a little different honk to it- more like a P than a J but not like a P exactly. It's in between.

^^interesting what you say there. It kind of confirms how the neck/wood has an affect on tone.

Being a true Jazz bass neck fan I have had trouble finding a Precision to my liking. I think the OP did well with his final choice.

I played a 2013 Amer Standard Precision in a shop recently and really liked the "modern C" Fender puts on these basses. I am truly a thinner neck fan but this Precision felt pretty close to my AVRI '62 Reissue.

Yup I bought it and I love it! 1.6 nut width and satin finish on the back of it really sold it for me.

Without a doubt the neck has to do with the sound of a guitar. I have a Fender P bass that sounded pretty dull. I had a custom hard rock maple V neck made for it. It improved the sound 100%. So yeah The Jazz with the P neck sounds like what it is. It's different.

Hard rock is one of the brightest tone woods you can get on a neck, so I'm sure it sharpened things up quite a bit!
