Spotted this on ebay but the headstock shown looks a little strange to me around the logo.

Not many pictures to go from unfortunately, but can anyone spot anything not quite right with this?

Dave might have more to add but it would have been nice to have a photo on eBay of the headstock logo with no camera flash flare obstructing most of the small text. Also, has anyone here seen a 9 hole pickguard on a P-Bass? I've been playing Fender basses since 1963 and have only seen 10 and 13 hole P-Bass pickguards personally. That doesn't mean that they didn't exist - I'm just saying that I never saw one configured as in the photo. Just doesn't look right and the seller has conveniently left out tech details and precise descriptions as if he or she is trying to put one over on prospective purchasers. Also, a price of $137.00 USD seems low for a bona-fide Fender that does NOT say Squire.

Unless the seller is willing to add proper data to the eBay listing, I'd personally keep away from it.

Yeah, already contacted the seller and they're fairly slow on responding. So far not able to get a serial number off them nor any other pictures. The only response I've had is "the serial number is in the picture" shortly after posting this and nothing since then.

Starting to look very off to me!

Thanks for your input PaducahLuke!

It's a nice looking bass, but you are correct in assuming it is not what it appears to be.

The decal is vintage 61-63, but the headstock is incorrect. If it were legit, it would be well rounded to the rear of the tuning pegs. The color is Daphne Blue, a personal favorite of mine, and was quite popular in the 60's. The pickguard would have been a tortoise shell, not white. There should be two holes each for a finger grip bar, bridge cover and pickup cover. I don't see them, maybe they are under the replacement pickguard. The bridge doesn't look right.

Without more pictures, serial number, etc. it is tough to tell you what it is, but I can say with some confidence it is not what it appears to be. I don't think the headstock is even of Fender issue. Again, more pictures would have been nice.

The seller is making no claims as to age or originality, so my guess is he doesn't know what it is and isn't intentionally trying to deceive anyone. I would not buy it.

Add: Nice catch P.L. I think we were typing at the same time. You are correct about the screw count.

Just taking an "extra" guess, but I compared the neck and headstock in the eBay photo to the neck and headstocks made for the Squire basses by Cort in Indonesia - looks identical to me. If that's the case, then someone stripped down and refinished a used Squire (Cort) neck and tried to make it look like a Fender P-Bass. The decals are offered by many sources and are NOT authorized by Fender.

It looks like it also may have PowerSound pickups and probably inferior controls as compared to an actual Fender P-Bass. Asian fakes use locally made accessories and if you do a little research, these slight differences in the look of components can be quite a wake up call for persons who THINK that their new axe is actually a Fender when in fact, it is a clone made from sub grade pieces from over Asia and misrepresented. Asian clones can be made for as little as $30.00 USD and sold for many times that figure to the unsuspecting.

The fact that the seller is being close mouthed is just one more indication of a fraud.

This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available.

Zero bids.

Translation: Oops! Somebody figured it out. Better pull this ad.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
