I went to GC in OKC today and they had the FSR Deluxe PJ Bass Special, so I checked it out.

Image

First things first. What first caught my attention was the Sea Foam Pearl finish. If you like this type of color, surf green, etc.....then you'll love the finish on this one. Very nice! Of course the above picture does not do it justice.

Fit and finish was excellent. I didn't look it over like I would if I was buying it, but I did a fairly good job checking it out and I saw nothing wrong.

I played it through a Mark 800 amp and 2x10's, all controls straight up at 12 o'clock. Very good sounding bass.. Plenty of variance in the tone control. Great punchy sound, clear and good bottom end.

The neck is slim, much like the one on my Squier Vintage Modified Jazz V except this one is a 4 string. Felt very smooth and fast. As usual the set up wasn't perfect, but I checked the intonation by ear and it was very close. Action was a little high for my taste, but some of you would probably think it's okay. Nothing that a set up wouldn't fix.

Definitely a bass I wouldn't mind having in my collection. Great finish, nice feel and a very good sounding bass. I'll give it two thumbs up!

Because the current FSR Deluxe PJ is actually different than the older active models Fender did a couple of years ago.

My opinion is that the Deluxe Active P Bass® Special is the "red-headed stepchild" in the Fender lineup.

It isn't the colors I hate so much as how the colors available stock look with the gold plastic guard. There isn't really a good color combo that appeals to me.

I love the instrument but hate how it looks. I consider the instrument a great value and possibly Fender's biggest bass bargain, but can't stand the current color line up. Some of the colors just don't go with the guard at all. The navy blue is about the only one that looks halfway decent.

If there was EVER a Fender bass screaming for a FSR color and guard makeover, it is the Deluxe Active P Bass® Special. Fender needs to look at some changes in the stock color treatments on this model and soon. This FSR is a good start.

I agree with BD. The bass looks to be an overall solid Fender. Just my personal preferences for color combinations, are I guess to conservative for their choices. I would like to play one though.

Personally I think Fender should adopt the 3-knob layout with the top mounted jack on all passive PJ Basses and keep the side mounted jack for the active models.

If Oteil Burbridge and others had this setup on their PJ Basses over the years I'm pretty certain that Fender could offer this layout as a standard feature on any passive Precision fitted with a Jazz bridge pickup!

I haven't really checked into Fender's PJ lineup nor have I read alot about these FSR PJ's but it's my understanding that, for now anyways, the color options for the FSR PJ's are only the Sea Foam Pearl with a wh pearl pg (pic above) and a Black with a tort pg.

I just happened to like the Sea Foam/Surf Green finishes and that's what initially caught my eye with this bass. I'm glad I took advantage of the opportunity to check this bass out. I'll agree with brotherdave, that this is one of Fender's better deals at $844. I guess that may be a little on the high side for a MIM model, but my initial thoughts on the one I checked out was the quality and sound was close to my MIA P-bass. The bass was fun to play and the sound quality was there.

So I'll stand by my recommendation. If you're in the market for a new bass at least check one of these PJ's out. I'm pretty sure you'll like the bass's sound and feel. Hopefully you can also find a color combination that you like.

The price doesn't seem that high for a little higher MIM model. That's about the price of the MIM Roger Waters Precision. I think the RWP goes for about $880. And if it's anything like the RWP, it's a well put together bass.

I should have stated "high end" for a MIM. I didn't mean that I thought it was too much for a MIM, just that most MIM's are less. I do think the bass is well worth the price.

I did notice that GC had the American Deluxe Jazz V in the natural finish that usually cost $1799 on sale at $1599.....just in case anyone's interested.

$899.00 is a pretty fair price for a FSR MIM P/J Bass,..........back in September I paid $950.00 for my MIM 3 tone sunburst Reggie Hamilton P/J set up, active/passive Jazz Bass with Hipshot Extender D-tuner .......I still think it was a lot of bang for the buck ......
Thanks for checking them out for us Glenn ,...... :)

grho50 Did the looking, and playing on the FSR Deluxe PJ. I really do believe the MIM Fenders are well assembled basses. The MIA Deluxe's do have a hefty sticker tag on them.

I think the GC, Fender American Deluxe Jazz V in the natural finish at $1,565.99, is the Blemished in stock bass.

I have to agree Mr.Nylon .....I ordered my MIM Reggie Hamilton Jazz Bass sight unseen back in September from Long & McQuade Music & was surprised when it arrived in 2 weeks,....This was my first MIM Fender (the rest of my Fenders are MIA, CIJ & MIJ) I was pleasantly surprised with the fit, finish & playability of this bass right out of the box....
it changed my opinion of MIM Fenders. :)

No doubt there are some very good instruments being produced in Mexico by Fender. Hopefully my posts didn't come off looking like I think differently, but MOST MIM models are made with cheaper electronics and hardware than USA made Fenders and the price usually reflects that. The FSR PJ I checked out would rival my USA P-bass in workmanship, playability and quality of sound. Minus the good ole p-bass thump of course. :D But there wasn't anything wrong with the punchy sound the PJ produced.
It's also has a $300 cheaper price tag than what I paid for my USA p-bass ($500 dollar cheaper MIM sticker price versus my USA sticker price). So I believe this bass a very good quality instrument and well worth the price.
