That's just outrageous! Out-Effen-Rageous!

THE most rare Fender Precision Electric Bass Guitar ever produced. And Steve has it!

I'll bet Steve has "The Funk Machine" too!

I have the fretless version of this with a maple neck, made 78-79. Just listed it on that site where people buy stuff if anyone wants pics.
I once saw the strat version for sale on a vintage guitar website in LA.
Hate to part with it.

This is the rarest Pre-CBS P-Bass that I've personally seen on the market in memory. There was another very rare bass around in the past two or three years, but it was a Fender built CBS era Lucite Jazz. There are known to be two of those i the world for sure. This older P-Bass to me is far more interesting and collectible since there appears to be only one.

Steve wasn't the only person inquiring with me about this particular 63 P-Bass which is how I knew about the unique neck paddle mark in the first place. Another person also contacted me on this same instrument previously.

So, I've been looking at this on and off for about 3 months now. I thought at first it was a refinish but the more I looked at it the bigger an enigma it became.

It is a real puzzle piece. We may never know for sure just how it came to be, but just the same...there it be.

You may have a 78 fretless but it is not exactly a version of this. There is only one of these things that I've ever seen.

So you have a cherry burst 78? What year was the cherry burst Stratocaster you saw?

Thanks for the detail Brother Dave, and the advice you gave me. Sorry if I caused you to lose sleep!!

George did not mention the mark in his written comments so I have popped a query off to see if they have any thoughts.

I put a few hours on the bass Thursday night. It's always hard to put a new toy down. Does not seem to have any negative issues, at least nothing I have picked up on. Still excited to have it.

Took it, and the rest of the collection, to the photographer's yesterday. Arrived at 10:30 AM and left at 3:30 PM, so about five hours, which included unloading and loading at his place. He said we can sit down with proofs next week, so that is kind of exciting. Brother Dave mentioned putting them into a book, I think that is kind of a cool idea. I still have a 68 Mustang out for restore but the photographer says he can cut that picture in when it returns. I found out what terrible shape I am in humping those basses all day...LOL!

It was fun collecting them, but now it's time to say goodbye to many of them so I can focus on a new collection, one that reflects the evolution, within Fender, of the bass guitar. I am looking forward to it.

In the appraisal Gruhn separates this "Red Sunburst" from "Cherry Sunburst" and said:

"Cherry sunburst was offered as an option in the 1980s but was only available for a few years."

I'm sure that was a general statement so a 78/79 in a cherry sunburst make sense. Since he was appraising the 63P, he did not go into detail between this Red with that Cherry.

I can't remember what year the strat was and I'll be damned if I can re-find it but I recall it being an early 70's.

What was this mysterious "mark" you were talking about? Mine has a couple undecernible marks in the neck pocket and on the underside of the neck kind of like a loose infinity sign or an open number 8...

The stamps are very faint but I can almost make out a name.

The mark on this 63 Red Burst is a nearly perfectly straight line in thick black marker covering pretty much the entire width of the neck paddle so that with the neck attached the mark is very slightly visible on one edge of the neck from the back for just a few milometers. On top of the straight line is what looks like a lazy "P" also in black marker. The part of this marking that looks like a "P" is not visible when the neck is mounted. I suppose it could be an infinity sign but I don't think so.

The infinity mark is common in mass production instruments. It is an inspection mark. This is SIMILAR but not the same to me.

Here is the mark on the 63 Red Sunburst neck in question. (Don't know how long this photo will be up.)

Good news. Now that Affprod has it I'm sleeping better because I know it is OK.

Here is the neck code stamping. Notice it is very unusual in that it is almost perfect! Very unusual and not haphazard at all like some of them are. The characters are even nearly precisely aligned. Lots of things on this looked almost "TOO GOOD" and this was one of them. (Again this photo could poof anytime.) I've compared the fonts carefully and the scoring marks in the wood direclty under the stamping. All are authentic.

True, for both guitar and bass.

The cherryburst finish was reintroduced in the 1990s as a colour option for the Sambora signature and a couple of other solidbody electrics, with the aged variant making its debuts circa 2001/2002 on certain American Deluxe and Custom Shop models.

Congrats affprod on such a rare find.
Beautiful p-bass and very interesting story. Hopefully someone will find out the complete story on this bass and share it with us.

Just a thought......could that be something like a 3 tone sunburst finish without the black?

I am going to try and trace its ownership backwards to see what I can find out, but I am not holding out too much hope. I have done this exercise with other basses and my batting average is not good.

Believe it or not, I do not have any three tone sunburst except for my 67 Coronado II. None of those colors appear to match.

I will have it apart next Wednesday for the first time. Maybe I will come across a clue.

It would seem that the bass is so rare that if I had it I don't think I'd even touch it very much other than to clean it. I might play it at home a little but I couldn't bring myself to put it in a car and drive around with it even. I'd be like the guy in Spinal Tap = "DON"T TOUCH IT"-- "IT CAN"T BE TOUCHED.........EVER". :D
