Right-handed bass players have it so easy

I'm left handed but for some wierd reason when I started playing bass in the late '70's the right handed models felt more natural & comfortable to me than left handed models(which there were even fewer choices back then.)

I started out right-handed in 1970. I didn't know that Fender had been making left-handed instruments all along until 1975! I could have started out lefty!

Anyway I am exceedingly happy that Fender makes left-handed instruments. :D

How difficult was it for you to re-learn playing left hand bass ?

Pretty easy actually, James. I already knew the basics. How to tune ( you must remember this was way before digital anything, much less tuners - I used a pitch pipe). Major; Minor, and Pentatonic scales don't change. "I heard it through the grapevine" is still played the same way.

I am VERY left-handed, so playing bass lefty wasn't just natural - it was a necessity.

Whenever i pick up a right-handed bass today, although I can still plunk around a bit righty, I just throw it upsidedown and play it backwards! Ha! Sounds pretty crazy that way too.

Makes sence as your thought pattern naturally works from the left hand point of veiw ....oddly enough though I'm left handed I can't play left handed ....I'm ambedextorous (I do some things right handed & some things left handed) ... :?

Wow those are some nice vivid shots. I'm thinking of questions about the logo.

Thanks for the compliment, stroker vance. As for the headstock decal, it's a lefty and that's the way it arrived from Fender's Fullerton factory. Perhaps a single decal did double duty for both left-handed Precisions and Jazz basses. Either way it is absolutely legit and original.

I thought about it and the logo might not look right or conform properly if applied in a left hand manner on the headstock. Nothing wrong with that though. I like natural finishes and have a 72 J nat. I've posted a bunch of pics of it before on here. I can't post pics anymore though and I can't figure out why unless I've been forbidden somehow. Wouldn't be a big deal anyway.

Oh man James, I'm so sorry to hear that. Of course there's no cure for that. I Googled it and found that there are many people who deal with this and lead a fairly normal life.

Hang in there buddy!

Sweet bass , linnin! Of course we do what is possible to get the best out of our instruments , as long as we do use them for what they're meant for ; playing / gigging .

Though I 'm impressed that the backside of this is in such a nice condition , after all those years. I suspect you to have a stomach-shape like mine :P - kind of natural bumper keeping it away from belt-buckles
The oldest guitar I have left now , is an acoustic that I bought new in -76 , and still use on a daily basis. The back side of it is nearly flawless :D

Those Big Block humbuckers are in fact Music Man units.

Fender labelled these HBs Big Block to avoid conflicts with Ernie Ball.

After all MM humbuckers were Leo's own creations.

Super happy that you like my Precision, A-Man! :D I don't wear a belt unless I absolutely have too, and I'll wear the buckle offset to my right side ala Elvis Presley if I'm playing. Over the years I have aquired the "natural bumper" of which you speak.

And it would be so So EASY for Fender to reverse the Reverse Jag and make it a lefty with those big beautiful Big Block {Music Man} p'ups. Heavy Sigh  You right-handers have it so good it's a crime

Just for giggles I pulled out the Performer had had been drilled for lefty and flipped the strap buttons.

Why am I surprised I couldn't play squat? I can't even play a 5 string because of the B, now I turned the whole bass upside down??? It was funny. But, I learned what I wanted to. Even though I am lefty, it has been too many years. The bass, even if the strings had been in correct order, felt totally alien in that position. Linnin, keep on thumpin, and I hope more models will become available for lefties - not that your 76 isn't enough....vroom!
