It all started innocently enough. I ordered this left-handed Precision in the fall of 1975 from Robert's Piano in Lynchburg, Virginia. It arrived late spring of 1976. We lived and gigged very happily together until 1985. My Precision's p'up died unexpectedly, but peacefully in the middle of the night. I was heartbroken, and that's when the trouble started.

Seymour Duncan had just come out with his "Quarter-Pounder" p'ups, and they were getting rave reviews. Warner Music in Richmond had not only one pair, but two in stock. I bought them both. They also had a shiny new Bad $@! II, so I bought that too!

I took everything to the expert luthier at Guitar Works in Carytown. He made the modifications with great glee in his heart. He also custom made and installed a stainless steel nut as had specified. Strung with Dean Markly 'Blue Steels' It was a thing of great beauty. A true work of art. Made To Rock. And so we did. Until 2013 when (for no good reason at all) I yanked out the SD 1/4 pounders at the bridge and replaced them with a pair of DiMarzio Split P's! I also had the frets dressed; truss rod tweeked, and GHS Precision Flats installed. :D And now I have an absolute Assault Bass!

Wow those are some nice vivid shots. I'm thinking of questions about the logo.

We are here today to mourn the loss of another incredible vintage instrument.

That said, if it's your's for life, nothing wrong with personalizing it.

I there was a Shenandoah Valley in FL I would pop over and ask for a test drive. I would expect to be told no, but I would ask just see what I could get out of it. I like the chrome pg with the black topped knobs....cool looking.

Thanks for the compliment, stroker vance. As for the headstock decal, it's a lefty and that's the way it arrived from Fender's Fullerton factory. Perhaps a single decal did double duty for both left-handed Precisions and Jazz basses. Either way it is absolutely legit and original.

Thank You James! :) It does sound great. The p'up combo of SD 1/4 pounders and Dimarzio Split P humbucker with rails is superb. Blended together properly they sound like one huge super pick up with sonic properties no single coil or humbucker could get by themselves. Full rich tone with a taut bottom; mids for days, and a ton of highs. Attack like you wouldn't believe! PUNCH! THUMP! WUMP! Call it what you like this bass has it on a thermonuclear scale.

You're more than welcome anytime, affprod. Everyone knows Fenton Farjnsworth is ambidextrous

The pickguard is actually a plastic 'mirror', and the knobs are standard Fender chrome Precision knobs. What you are seeing in that first vertical shot is the reflection of a building across the street that is painted flat black making the tops of the knobs look black.

If you look at the horizontal shot hanging off the railing you'll see cobblestones reflected in the pickguard.

Pffft! Get over it dude  That bass was just nine years old when I first modified it, and in no way was it a vintage anything. Only Leo's Fenders (pre-CBS) were considered 'vintage' at that time. In fact there was great disdane for CBS Fenders. I have to say that the stock Fender pick-up sounded like utter crapola. Little did I know that pick-ups could be rewound, and just a mere four miles away a guitarist for a band called the Bopcats by the name of Lindy Fralin was rewinding pick-ups at home as a side line to generate some income.

Well said Linnin,...... Many Fender's back in the mid & late '70s were considered sub par to pre CBS Fender's,....there were Japanese knock off's starting to show up in North America that were as good, if not better than American made Fender's
This concerned Fender ,...... this corcern would later ( in the early '80's) result in Fender Contracting Japanese guitar makers FigiGen Gakki & Tokai to make Fender Guitars thus creating Fender Japan in 1983.
Fender then built the current Corona factory in the 1980's, retooled how they made guitars & the rest is history (this is my nutshell version of the Fender Japan story there's more to it at these links) : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Japan
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Mus ... orporation

Anyway I digress,..... I think you have a sweet Bass there,...& I like the Lindy Fralin info,.... cool stuff... :)

Right-handed bass players have it so easy :!: You have all kinds of wonderful Fender factory hot rods from which to choose. I mean really. Look at the Blacktop Jazz with twin split p'ups. The spacing is a bit different than mine, but yank the stock p'ups and instal a pair of SD 1/4 pounders & a pair of DiMarzio Split P's and there you have it. The stock bridge is fine as is the synthetic nut no need to change them. So for like $700 you can have a totally smoking hot rod. The reverse Jag with the twin Big Block humbuckers is a killer sounding hot rod. Just buy; play, and enjoy. With the new Cabronita I'd throw in a TV Jones Thunderblade so fast even Fenton Farjnsworth would be impressed. You guys have it far too easy.
