It seems that Fender decidedly tweaks classic designs with features borrowing from their successful Classic and Deluxe series basses.

The result is this beautiful MIM FSR Deluxe PJ Bass Special featuring a tuxedo maple Jazz Bass neck, BadAss II bridge with grooved saddles and two huge-sounding Vintage Special PJ pickups with AlNiCo 5 magnets.

The first real Fender PJ Bass with a top-mounted jack! :P

This huge-sounding hybrid is actually identical to the now-discontinued FSR Deluxe Active Precision Special cosmetics and features-wise except for the addition of passive pickups/circuitry, top-mounted input jack and a different bridge.

I've always had a weakness for a surf green with a maple neck. If they would have offered that color combo in the American Standard line, I would have bought my ASP5 sooner......

Now that I have a fantastic Jazz bass.....a great P-bass......a very good Squier Jazz......maybe I do NEED a PJ bass!

If you're seeking the best of both worlds, why not putting a 5-string AlNiCo V Jazz pickup in the bridge and make a 3-knob config with top-mounted jack?

Your candy cola ASP5 definitely deserves a PJ configuration! :P

No need to sell the ASP5 for getting another bass, dude.

Didn't say a word about selling the ASP5......ain't gonna happen.

No way in he!! am I gonna mod it (ruin it in my opinion) by putting a j bridge pup in either.

Man.....your imagination runs overtime.....don't it?

An ASPJ5 conversion couldn't ruin or devalue your bass if the whole job is done by an expert luthier.

With an extra Jazz pickup in the bridge you'll no longer need to switch instruments between the songs! :P

Blending both pickups make for the punchiest low-B string you'd expect from a high-quality passive 5-string.

If you feel uncomfortable keep everything stock :)

You're right grho50 Intsalling a Jazz pick up in your ASP5 would be a mistake,.....
Keep it stock, ........

I will. No way I'll take this great passive p-bass and morph it into something else.
Nothing against a PJ bass, but Fender makes 'em like that..(like that surf green one  )...so no need to mess up mine.

You're so right, grho50,..... & if you ever want a P/J Bass Fender sells the Reggie Miller P/J Jazz bass, the Tony Franklin Fretted & Fretless P bass that has a P/J set up & then there's the Duff Makagan P bass that has a P/J set up & it also has a Jazz bass neck.
I myself have the Reggie Miller jazz bass .... it's got the best of both worlds & one of the reasons I bought it was the fact that I wasn't gonna wreck a perfectly good P-Bass by routing it out to stick in a pick up ........
& speaking of these two P/J basses that are pictured in the beginning of this thread We still Don't even know where these basses are available or even if they are available ?? I asked earlier in this thread & haven't gottten an answer..

I've looked at a few online stores, like Sweetwater, and saw no mention of those basses, so I'm not sure where they are being sold either.
I've heard a local bass player with what I believe was the Reggie Miller PJ bass. He had a great sound, but what caught my eye in this post was the surf green color. I've just always had a weakness for that color, but never owned one since I don't buy basses for their color. Surf Green has never been an option with the basses I've purchased. (My FCS was teambuilt and spec'd out by Sweetwater.)
Maybe that's a project I could do or have done with my Squier VM V, refinishing it in surf green. Wouldn't have to worry about hurting the value of the bass. Of course it wouldn't increase the value either, but the bass's value doesn't matter to me since I don't plan of selling it anyways. It's a great backup bass.

Mechanically I love this idea. Big fan.

Cosmetically... not so much. I'd sooner have an unbound rosewood finger board - that'd look awesome with those colors, or a burst or something.

Too much flash for me as they are...
