Hi all,

Im on the lookout for a P-Bass at the moment and came across this on ebay

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221237575104

It has a serial num of S 621069 which came up as

Guitar Info
Your guitar was made at the
Fullerton Plant (Fender - CBS Era), USA
in the Year(s): 1976

...when i looked it up.

Can anyone give me any tips on if its real or not? Its going really cheap atm so I imagine its not but just in case :)

Many many thanks if anyone responds to this. The bid ends in 20 hours so I imagine I may be posting this too late.

Thanks!

EDIT I saw on another forum someone was saying a 76 should have screws on the middle of the pick guard like http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss118/georgestrings/IMAG0198.jpg and I note the one I posted does not - but could be a new pickguard I guess...

yes I think it may be the real deal,....the Serial number does check out as it being made in 1976,........ & with regard to there not being 2 screws in the position that would hold a chrome pickup cover,..... the pick guard has most probably been changed,......it's usually one of the first customizing things many bassist do when they buy a bass.

At the end of the day though, there could be many reasons why it's going cheap, there could be neck or pickup issues .... but hey it's cheap so you can't really go wrong,.....

ok thanks - ive been talking to the seller online and seems friendly and says there are no neck issues and plays as well as a new USA P-Bass!

I dont know how far people go when making a parts bass but I guess the worst it could be is a fender neck on some other body - which also has a fender neck plate...I imagine the neck must be worth a little anyhow

If there is a Jazz pickup on it, why is it not in the pics?

The name by which it's listed and the real name of this model can be different. And so far I've never seen P/J combo with 3 pots and jack input on the top, so that's why I'm asking... :)

Ah, sorry I dont know - the seller bought it as seen a few year ago so all I know is whats on these page and a few questions to the seller. He did mentioned the strings are through the body though which is quite distinctive. I dont mind buying something thats been devalued through some custom work but dont want to get the equivilent of a cut & shut car which is more what I worry about !

The volute at the heel of the neck (back of neck) doesn't look right - the cut looks to severe and not sanded round enough.

so do you think the neck may not be a real fender neck?

I see what you mean when I compare to https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=volute+neck&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=xfW5UfvlM4mh4gTn4YHoBw&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=954&bih=873#tbm=isch&sa=1&q=fender+p+bass+back&oq=fender+p+bass+back&gs_l=img.3...3357.4133.4.4336.5.5.0.0.0.0.105.270.4j1.5.0...0.0.0..1c.1.17.img.lzoIfymwon0&bav=on.2,or.r_cp.r_qf.&bvm=bv.47883778,d.d2k&fp=7527fcf4bbf52275&biw=954&bih=873&facrc=_

Are all fender necks similar in this regard? Is the edge the sign of a cheaper neck?

Also the body doesn't seem to be classic precision shape. Look at the "left horn" and then compare to some googled images of "fender precision bass body".

Also as you can see screws on pickguard doesn't match. That wouldn't be such a problem but it also tells that it probably isn't the real deal.

Next thing is the head - the shape is also not classic Fender shape, it's too "pointy":

My suggestion is that it's either only Fender neck or Fender Precision USA sticker on the head. To me it really doesn't look like 40y old bass.

Ok, thanks all for all your replies - really appreciate it - thanks for being so helpful.

I decided to skip the sale and so did most others it seems - it went today for £215.

Instead I went out this morning and bought a Fender Jaguar (Modern Player)

http://www.fender.com/series/modern-player/modern-player-jaguar-bass-maple-fingerboard-black/

...which suits my needs great.

Again many thanks :)
