I like the Cabronita P-bass with the lone Fedilitron Humbucking pickup ,...... anything more would be too much (More isn't always better) ..IMO & I hear ya Dave with regard to the Pickguard.....it's purely ornimental (but I can live with it) however all may not be lost & that pick guard may be able to be removed ...... check out this promo for the Cabronita,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBWscVo7P8E
...you'll see routing on the back of the body...... I've yet to try the Cabronita & everytime I see this promo for it I say to myself Damn!! that's one beauty of a Bass!! I'm definately sold on the Sunburst model,..... I think it would of been cool to offer this bass in Olympic White with tort Guard though the Sunburst is killer..........they've yet to show up in stores in my area....... :(

I thought the Porrazo had a TV Jones ThunderBlade with a Greasebucket?

Brother Dave, what is your assessment of Fender's "greasebucket" tone circuit? What makes it different?

I'm not a fan of the "Greasebucket" as I think it restricts both ultra low and lower mid bass tones. Now with the TV Jones Thunderblade killing off some ultra lows might be a blessing, but I'm not sure as I've never played this thing.

I'm familiar with the Greasebucket from the first generation Highway One Jazz Bass. I had a couple of them. What makes the Greasebucket different is the addition of one more cap and a 4.7 K resistor to the tone pot circuit. The effect is reminiscent of the original 51 P-Bass tone circuit that limited bass on purpose. One of the caps is a 0.10uf and the other one is 0.022uf. The 0.022 is put in series with the resistor to ground.

Some people claim a Greasebucket is cleaner sounding. I don't think a standard treble bleed sounds "dirty" in the first place though, so how can the Greasebucket sound cleaner?

The Greasebucket actually makes more sense to me in a Strat or Tele guitar than in a bass because of the way it behaves, acting pretty much like a fixed band-pass filter throttling the tone and for some things this is desirable on a guitar. You can change the restricted frequencies by changing the caps to different values. I'm not a big fan of them for basses though.

I had a HWY 1 P bass for about half a minute. The Greasebucket is awful on a P bass, imo. You can roll off the highs, but you never get that aggressively sweet mid-range drive or the low end thump that is pretty much what makes a P bass a P bass. It was awful. To me the S-1 Switch on the old American Standards used a different device, but in the end produced a similar effect in terms of their result. They completely "neutered" the P in lieu of a better term. Luckily I was able to sell it for as much as I bought it for. A perfect example of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", imo

Ah-Ha! So the Greasebucket tone circuit is actually an electronic bass castration device.

As far as I can see the only way I could really improve the Cabronita (other than the b/w/b guard or no guard at all) would be to put vintage frets on it instead of the medium jumbos. That seems like a pretty small gripe. Though I have to be honest. I've heard the Squier Vintage Modified series has been making leaps and bounds in recent years. While I want a 1st generation style bass. The Precision TB and Classic Vibe look pretty hard to beat for a beater back up bass. Those prices are pretty hard to beat.

It sure does. Though that angle does let us know the truss adjustment is at the headstock. Which is disappointing.

I don't know. I've had issues with the American Standard truss rod sockets rattling...had to hide the noise with the tone knob. I pick heads over tails.
