I don't like the pickguard much and wouldn't need it. Wondering if when removed there is a router hole under the pickguard like on my 51 RI. Hoping it is a nice smooth top with no holes or slots. Anybody know?

I'm a real sucker for first generation P-basses, especially the slab ones. I suppose subconsciously I figure they have more wood and thus more tone potential. Of course then there is that huge baseball bat neck.

It is surprising how often people talk about body tonewoods while overlooking that the neck actually contributes as much if not more to the overall tonal quality of the bass.

I was thinking the same thing. I could deal with a black or B/W/B on the CAR but I doubt anyone will be making replacement Cabronita guards. I think if there was no route that I'd just strip the guard and put the screws back in. I miss my 51 RI P terribly. Should I not get a chance to get her back by next tax season I may scoop up a Cabronita. I can't see any reason there would be a route there given the shape of the guard. It's not like it runs down to a control plate. I'd think it'd be a rear route and control cavity.

Unfortunately this bass is available with a single Fidelitron humbucking pickup.

A second Fidelitron humbucker in the neck would make that axe more versatile.

If you send the original to a custom maker (WD Music, Pickguardian) as a template you'll get a replacement.

You can also DIY a Cabronita pickguard, but this could be a tedious work unless you've enough skills to make one yourself. Otherwise you have no other choice to get a direct replacement from the pickguard makers mentioned above.

This bass is getting talked about more and more. I strolled through the bass section of Guitar center last week and was suprised to see select basses. that was it, just the regular stuff, no Cabronitas.

Got to think, for that price. it has to have a routing hole.

The GC's around here will only stock P's and J's and only the standard models. (MIA, American Special and MIM) They say if you want a more obscure model or sig model that you have to order it and put down a deposit. They think they are playing the odds. Yet they still have the same tired old basses on the wall for almost a year at a time.

Meanwhile things like the Squire Jag and Classic Vibe models fly off the shelves. I don't know many bassists that gig that only have ONE bass. Most have at least a P or P knock off and then either a J style bass or a Ray style bass. Most of the time that's their 5 string if they bother with using one.

As someone who doesn't bother with 5 strings and already has two P models. If I get another bass I'd get another slab body. Preferably a Single Coil P to replace my 51 RI. However, this Cabronita is certainly making the case for something a little more out there. Either that or the Pawn Shop Reverse Jag.

Our GC's will come right out and tell you that unless someone else orders it and doesn't want it that you'll never see it on their wall. That's one of the many reasons they no longer get my business.

I totally forgot about that route. Good call! Hmmm... In any event it'll be next year til I'm in the market. :?

I am checking to see if it can be ordered without the pickguard and holes associated, and what may be hiding beneath - without paying huge upcharge. It really is cool.

Pretty sure that will be a negatory response.

The fact it only has one pickup and the lone pickup is centered on the top is very appealing to me. One volume and one tone is my favorite control set. Brian Wilson's volume only concept wasn't too bad an idea either.

If it came with two Fidels instead of one then I might be the only person on the planet who would find it way less appealing. That pickup location is ideal.

I don't think this thing needs the tiny little pickguard at all. The guard it comes with is purely ornamental. I'd want to take it off completely with just wood on the top.

Something Mark Hoppus implemented on his "Jazz" model. (P pups and neck on a J body) Ironic that he gets stoned by so many old timers for it. Had that bass come out with Wilson's name they probably would've been lining up.

Not the only one. I'm right there with you 100% on this.

From just looking at the front that was my conclusion as well. For there to be a front route under there you'd actually have to backtrack towards the neck and then go under the wood. That doesn'tmake much sense. A rear plate seems the most likely to me.

The CNC routing positioning hole on the 51 RI was totally unnecessary also, and yet it is there.

I always wondered about that. Good point. There could be a completely unnecessary hole there. Especially as they probably are using the same blanks to start with. So the longer the blank follows the same manufacturing procedure as the other bodies the more cost efficient it is. What a bummer. I guess I'd need to get that custom guard should I go that route. :?

I thought the Porrazo had a TV Jones ThunderBlade with a Greasebucket?

The Porrazo Custom Relic had the features you cited and a different bridge.

The MIM Porrazo lacks off those but is offered in a limited variety of finishes. :P
