OUCH. Yes pretty sure it is 3/16th's. There are some instances where I would NOT attempt a repair myself, unless it is like a junky pawn shop rescue that was fragged anyway. If it is an instrument of any value this is one of those instances where I'd seek a professional luthier to repair it properly since special tools may be required.

The walnut PLUG with the small hole is hot-glued into the larger hole where the truss rod not is located. This plug will usually come out after application of adequate concentrated heat on the glue from a heat gun. You have to do this in a manner to reuse the plug. Once the plug is out, you can then back out the stripped nut with the proper tool, such as the Stewmac GRIPPER Truss Rod Wrench for 3/16ths and replace the stripped nut with a new 3/16th Fender nut. Then you need to re-glue the walnut plug back in and after that glue dries set up the instrument again. This is a somewhat delicate repair requiring some finesse and the proper tools which can run into hundreds of dollars. I'd only get someone with experience to do this.

Thanks Brother Dave, I had this problem a while ago with another P/ bass that was remedied with a TORX adjuster, this time absolutely nothing will fit the socket Metric or inch, Its a case of throwing the neck in the garbage and buying a Warmoth replacement or removing the skunk stripe and making a bold attempt at a repair, Its a shame Fender has not adopted the the EBMM system of truss rod adjustment with a simple rod placed in a hole at the body end of the neck Unless EBMM they have a patent on it

This should probably be best approached by removing the plug with a heat gun, not by messing with the skunk stripe.

For what it's worth, I had an Ibanez where someone had stripped out the head. I took it in and the luthier used what appeared to be an auto mechanic's "easy out" tool to adjust the truss rod. He figured he could get a couple more adjustments out of it that way, but then it would be totaled. It was, and is, a practice bass that I keep at one of my remote offices, so it is not used frequently and has not even had the strings changed on it since then. But it worked, and depending on what your usage is, you could possibly put off repair for awhile.

The neck has been re fitted on the bass and returned to owner as "beyond economical repair" who bought it unseen on the ´Net for 450 euros and as he did not want to spend more than 50 euros on a solution ! I have found out since that he was not a musician but just a "buy it and sell it" dealer who bought a left hooker and is now lumbered with so much scrap ! there are more interesting details to this story which i will not bore you with...unless pressured !!....Peter
