Depends on the player. Some people can play a $5000 bass and make it sound like a $200 one. Some people say I am that some people. Others can play a $200 bass and make it sound like a million dollars. Part of it is the player.

I have a P/J which I like BUT it isn't much of a P and it isn't much of a J. It is something else completely. This is pretty much a universal rule of passive P/J's. The LOADING of the 2 pickups screws with the uniqueness of the P and the J so that neither sounds quite like they do in a Precision or a Jazz. What you get when you mix the two pickups on one instrument is like mixing a beagle and a schnauzer. It isn't a beagle or a schnauzer, it is a bauzer or a schneagle.

Another vote for SINGLE COIL FIRST GENERATION P-BASSES. Especially the 1968 Telecaster Bass and the 1954 P-Bass. The Telecaster Bass pickup was different and BETTER to me. I go crazy for the 1962 AVRI P-Bass. Just a gorgeous instrument that inspires confidence. Never played a bass with a tone I like better. Just awesome.

I think when you LIKE an instrument you sound better playing it whether it is a Squier or Fender or Silvertone or First Act. I love this one Chinese knockoff P-Bass and have more fun playing it than you'd think. Won't ever sell it either. I have some Fenders I love too, but why take them to outdoor gigs where it might rain?

I can't argue with you, my friend. I miss my 51RI P very much. Every day I hope to open my email and see the player I sold it too wanting to sell it back. However, I hear he's doing quite well with it in a bigger market and still loves it. :?

Unfortunately for me I can make anything sound bad. :(

And I thought I was being helpful! Thanks for the caveat. I also have to keep in mind that the Alembic Activators in mine are really a whole 'nother world than other setups, passive OR active.

Great advice!

I don't think the Precision bass has ever had a down period. The best one's I've played were from the 1995-1999 era.
