I really like the sound I get from my Steve Harris, P-Bass. it has a
Seymour Duncan Basslines SPB-1 Vintage Style Split Single-Coil Precision pickup
it's a solid big sounding P-bass ............ :)

Steve Harris=excellent bass, had one, loved it, versatile without a doubt, BUT for a lot of players the neck is far to chunky, not comfortable for longs periods for me, so had to go.

Roadworn Precision= best "bang for buck P bass" on the market at this moment in time imho.

But the American 58 Vintage is one of the Sweetest I have come across for along time.

Best sounding P-Bass would be one that you yourself have dialed to your own specs. Whether its upgrades or change of strings or just the controls on the bass and amp.

But I'm gonna contradict my own statement and say that my '51RI is the best. Hence why I only use it for recordings. :D

According to the rest of the band my AV57 sounds the best of my P's, and they have heard them all. I have to agree. There is something really mellow about the sound that one produces.

+1 for the Roadworn- but something has to be said for Jazz basses here. They are a good all round bass and do just fine in all situations. I haven't used mine for any Polka yet but I'm sure it would clean up the place if I did. Also a Jazz bass I have that I put a P bass neck on is absolutely a fine sounding instrument. It has this tone I can only describe as "overtone honk". It definitely sounds like a mixture of a P and a J. I don't know why but it's an even tie- both ways --P and J ( as to the sound.) At least to my ears.

Wow. Talk about a loaded question. Honestly, I love them all. I love my 70's P's. Respect the 60's P's. Drool over both the 50's split and single coils.

Personally, I think for me in terms of FMIC production models. I would place the CS 55 P as the top of the line. Its tone is unmatched to my ears in terms of having a "soul". (next to the real deal vintage instruments) A CS 55 P with flats is really something to listen to. The notes don't seem to be played. They seem to be pulled out of the air around you. Like they were always there and you were just waiting to hear them.

That being said. In terms of "if you could only get ONE P bass for the rest of your life?". I think I would have to go with the old AVS 57 P bass. It's the one bass that really can do EVERYTHING. The raised A gives you a mid range punch that can feel at home in 50's Rock, Soul, and Blues. It can handle any Classic rock. Prog rock or Motown tune. Even more, the raised A can give you enough punchy P goodness to handle funk, punk and pop. If there were one P that I would absolutely HAVE to have if I could have no other. From a working musician standpoint it would have to be the 57 RI.

With regard to merging the P-Bass with a Jazz bass,......... I'd have to say my P/J set up ,
3 tone sunburst Reggie Hamilton Jazz bass with Tort pick guard is a great sounding bass that I refer to as the Swiss Army knife of Basses, because besides having an American Standard split coil pickup & a Custom Noiseless single coil Jazz Pickup, it can be played in Active or passive mode, & it also has a Hip Shop X-tender D-Tuner, I also love the satin finish neck on this Bass...it's very versatile ...IMO :)

I actually take that one step further.
IMO, the best sounding Precision is actually a Jazz.
Once I made the switch to Jazz I never went back.

One man's opinion.

If you really want versatility, then I think P-J makes a lot of sense. You can still get the split-coil P-Bass growl, or you can add in the bridge pickup for a deeper, more scooped sound. Or you can favor the bridge pickup for more of the Jaco burp.

Fender has several P-Js right now in a wide price-range - here are a few:

http://www.fender.com/basses/jaguar/modern-player-jaguar-bass/

http://www.fender.com/basses/jazz-bass/aerodyne-jazz-bass/

http://www.fender.com/basses/precision-bass/american-deluxe-precision-bass/

I had a Jazz Bass pickup added to my '70s P - I also like the look!

The '70s is strung with rounds which offers even more possibilities. The Duck Dunn Signature on the left is strung with flats - much less versatile but what it does it does great!

For versatility I think I'd have to go with the Tony Franklin Fretted. Which would give you the configuration of the above modded 70's P. (Beautiful btw, I LOVE mine) However, the 3 stage selector switch allows you to evade the one downfall of the P/J configuration. Loading. P/J basses can't ever get the traditional Split coil P punch because of it. The Franklin allows you to by pass that with the switch. You can play P solo, P/J, or bridge position J pup solo. P/J's sound great, but they are still a compromise, imo. The Franklin is a production run bass. A bit on the pricey side, but I've never heard a bad word about one.

The Tony Franklin Fretted & Fretless P-Basses are excellent instruments,....
another Fender P/J Bass that's yet to be mentioned is the Duff Mckagan P-Bass
This bass is essentially a 1986 Jazz Bass Special with a P-Bass Body & jazz Bass Neck
it also has a split coil P-Bass pickup & a Seymour Duncan Bass lines single coil Jazz pickup, a 3 way pickup selector toggle switch & lets not forget the TBX (Teble, Bass Expander) control ...... this bass is MIM & the original Jazz Bass specials
were made in Japan. The only Cheezy thing about this bass in my opinion is the scull & Bones neck plate... but that being said,...who would ever really see it.

Yeah, I think if I ever get another bass. (It'd be likely a few years from now) I think the Oly White Franklin would be what I'd go with. My Classic 70's and Antigua are perfect for almost everything I'm doing right now. However, we have a couple of songs where I play really way up in the higher registers and they are both pretty heavy handed for that kind of work.

The Franklin would be nice because I could simply slap the switch all the way back and get the J pup solo'd. Seems a silly use for it, especially since I'd probably just use it as a regular P for 97% of the time. Still, it'd be nice to own an upscale Fender model at least once, right?

The Raised A really is a thing of beauty. It sits in a mix so well. Strong, but never overbearing. Smooth, but never weak.
