So if I am trying to decide between a MIM P-bass and the Cabronita bass, which would you guys recommend? I'm having a hard time deciding, but I am leaning toward the Cabronita.

MIM Standard, or Classic, Roadworn or Artist Series? If you're talking a standard P bass and might be open to something a little different I'd say the Cabronita might be a good option. I really dig the sound of the Gretsch style pick up, and the Fender design is infinitely more playable than a Gretsch bass, imo. The MIM Classic and Roadworn P Basses (I think only the 50's is left, I used to have a 70's) are some of the best basses you can get for under a grand anywhere. The Roadworn or Classic 50's is well regarded. The Roadworn Dirnt also looks like it's a great bass. However, If it were between a plain jane MIM Standard and a Cabronita? The Cabronita, easy. Just my opinion, of course.

Thanks, King, I appreciate your reply. I was down to a standard MIM P-Bass and the Cabronita. I'll take a look at the others as well, but I really like the sound and feel of the Cabronita.

+1111 for the Cabronita! It's really unique, and how much longer is it going to be around anyway? Fender will make Precisions until the end of time. 8)

I was actually thinking this very thing the other day when I saw a 2-tone Cabronita P bass in my local music store...

long time reader , first time poster here. tried out a cabronita last week, and the only thing holding me back is the D and more so the G string didnt align very well over the top of the pickup poles, but seemed to be sitting in the right place over the bridge saddles, to those that own these , does that seem a common factor? thanks

We're talking the Fender one and not the Squier one, right? If so, the A and D should be directly over the pole pieces, and the E and G should be real close, maybe slightly (and I mean REAL) slightly wide of them. However, the string channels in the bridge saddles are wide enough to let you make slight spacing adjustments. If things are way off, though, especially if things are skewed to one side, then the factory messed up somewhere.

yes were talking the fender cabronita,
the G string needs to move towards the center line of the guitar ie to narrow the spacing, but the string is already hard up against the block on the bridge saddle, so cant slide anymore in the direction needed.
i asked the bass tech in the shop about it and he concurred regards the misalignment, but suggested the magnet in the pickup was strong enough to compensate for it

if the link below works , its like this

How nice of this $#&@ board to log me out when I tried to post my long reply. Nice job, coders.

Basically, the answer is the alignment looks fine and any slight offsets at the E and G won't make a difference in the real world.

I looked at the string spacing over the pickup in the posted picture. The E is off to the left slightly of it's pole...... If you swapped the E string to the G position it would look the same as looking at the off set of the E string only on the other side of the pickup. Right? - ---- the E looks slightly off to the left of its pole. Switch it around and it will look the opposite and be slightly off to the right of the G pole- but still more of the E will be over the pole because the string is fatter than the G string-- just like it ( E string) looks in the picture in it's proper position in the bridge.. if you put the G string on the other side of the neck (E position) it's going to look just as far off to the left of the E pole as it does to the right of the G pole.. This tells us what? It says the stock bridge slots are cut slightly wider or the bridge itself is a little wide for the pickup and maybe the neck(?) It tells me if I don't like the G string not being directly above the pole, it can be fixed by slotting the G saddle so the string rides over the pole. In the perfect world I'd just get new saddles and slot them to line up dead over the top of all the poles. So what the heck am I saying? I'm saying anything that anyone percieves to be wrong with the bridge can be taken care of no swet. The SOUND is the most important thing I think with any bass. All the other stuff can be taken care of- --nutz- frets- etc etc... The search for "the sound ".... that's what I'm saying.

Apparently the board likes you better than me. This time I'll write in Notepad and paste it in here.

My lost post suggested Dremeling the slots wider, but my only concern was whether the saddles were solid or hollow. I'm assuming solid, but trying to mod Ric bridge saddles in the past has left me real cautious about assuming anything.

Also at some point the offset between the string hole and the spot in the slot where you want the string to sit *could* get to where the string might want to drift back laterally to line up better with the hole, due to string tension.

IMO the real (non-)problem is that the pickup itself is too narrow for perfect alignment. Widen the pickup, and you could widen the string spacing in the bridge slots. Looking at the neck heel says the neck width would accommodate, in terms of available room. Not saying it should be done, just that it could be.

Some real-world context: My Cabronita's alignment is more or less the same as the burst one in the pic. There's no volume loss on the outer strings. Zero. Both are very full and clear. In terms of strength and punch and grunt, those outer strings lack nothing whatsoever, and IMO totally blow away their standard and USA Precision counterparts no matter how you set the pickups on those last 2 basses. Yes, I do own all 3, all bought new from Sweetwater within the past 7 or so months.

Okay, hopefully this thing will make it up to the board this time........ :x

Your post made it. I've had the glich before. Maybe once or twice in 3 years.
Glad to hear the spacing doesn't matter as to the sound of the bass. I need to sell some basses and go out and check the CabCalloway out. I'm kind of full up on basses like Brother Dave is. All available spaces are taken up with guitars etc. 8)
