Gents,
I used the search app to find some answers but want more. So, if you please...since basses weigh more than six-strings, should stands be an issue as regards neck tension? I use Hercules brand stands in which the bass just hangs. The bottom end rests against the legs without support. Are bottom supports inherently better for the happiness of my treasures?
All considered replies most welcome.
Thanks in advance.

I have & use both types of stands & have never had a problem with either,..... that being said,.. I've played with guitar players who would only use the Hercules type stands were the guitar hangs,...stating that it was better for the neck,...... I however like both types of stands. :)

I have used both types in the past and have not had an issue with either. Now I keep my basses in hard cases unless in use.

I use the Hercules stand I have now that I've gone back to playing split coil P basses with the Strat style head stock full time. I never felt comfortable using one when I was gigging with my 51RI P because of the Tele shaped headstock and that's a lot of weigh to be hanging by so small an amount of wood. My guitarist is borrowing my dual guitar Herc stand that hangs as he needs to switch guitars mid set and I only switch in between sets and use the single stand and keep my second bass in the case until it needs to come out. That one has the body rest on the legs. I've never had an issue with either stand. Both seem to treat my basses really well. Other than the tele style headstock issue I think the Hercules stands are great. I've had mine for 6 years and they are still solid as a rock with no sign of quitting.

Same here ....I should of added in my post that I keep all my basses in hard shell cases when not in use. .....it adds some peace of mind knowing they're properly protected when not in use. :)

I follow the exact same rule.

All of my stands are from "On Stage Stands". They have padded rests, adjustable neck support cradles for height and have a secure locking strap that holds the neck in the cradle. I have used other brands costing much more than these and the other brands never held up as well as the "On Stage Stands" brand do.

I do not recommend the 'hanging' type stands - especially while using Gibson axes. I'm sure that everyone here at the forum knows about Gibson's neck and headstock issues over the past several decades on some models. However, no stand will protect a guitar if it is walked into or in other ways bumped into or snagged with a cord. Use caution no matter which type or brand that you decide on.

James - Please let us know how that works out if you go that route. I saw those advertised recently and they look quite interesting.

Thanks.

I think they're great!! what turned me on to them was that they're used for some of the Basses at Long & McQuade Music in Vancouver & I've noticed a lot of the Pro's are using them as well.
I think I'll pull the trigger & get one next week, .......from what I saw & from how they're made,... I think this would be a safer option over the conventional stands because you can't knock the it over as easy & your 3 to 5 Basses would be in a more condensed space.... Great to use in a practice space, or your house or at a gig..... :)

Hercules stands have the treated foam rubber that doesn't discolor, or leave a mark on the finish. Nitro etc. I use the Hercules and haven't a problem with a bass hanging like that, with no real lower support.

I've never been a fan of hanging instruments. All of my present stands are floor stands that support the body. Just one of my weird things.

My favorite is a cheap little FretRest I bought about six years ago, I tried to find it just now but apparently, they aren't available anymore. It's smaller than any other stand I've used but it holds a bass better than any other, especially my Jazz.

I use Hercules stands for both of my Basses. Very pleased with the stability and the cushioning they provide.

I've used the same stands for guitars & basses, but my bass is light--so who knows?

but the same should work for both.

Unless you have a flimsy one---which you probably shouldn't use for a guitar either.

All of my stands are Hercs except one. I have a more conventional stand that is a little taller that makes it more usefull for bass guitars but even it seems still a little too short. I really like the Herc stands. I wish they made one that was 4 or 5 inches taller than standard.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
