A lot of posts have revolved around p bass with a j neck, so when I stumbled across this 63 P body with 63 J neck, I had to pick it up. There is nothing original except the wood, and I am not even totally sure about the body as any markings in the neck pocket or routings were sprayed over and it feels noticeably light to me. The dealer said he had seen all four pieces of the two basses, and dimensionally it seems right, but that's all I have going for me. All the parts appear to be recent Fender reissues except the pups, which are Fralins.

Won't get to really play it until I set it up again tomorrow, but the quick test drive I gave it before taking it apart was quite enjoyable.

Nice a P with a J neck is a good thing. My 74 is a PJ. I didn't realize it was a J neck untill a few years after I had it. I was young.

OK, so is the neck marked JAZZ BASS or is it an "A" width P-Bass neck?

Lots of people did this mod but back in the day some people ordered them that way.

Hey Steve, let us know what you think of the Lindy Fralin p'up as compared to a stock Fender and a Seymour Duncan 1/4er pounder. TIA
Linn

The "A" width neck on my P bass IS slightly different than the Jazz neck on my 72 Jazz. The profile or the back of the neck is a little different. The 72 seems a little rounder. I think Bro Dave wrote something about this predicament at one time or another.

Yes the neck back profile, or shape, was pretty much fixed for the year regardless of width.

I think the American Standard Precision deserves an optional A-shaped neck.

I don't have the knowledge (yet) to determine may things, Brother Dave, this would be one of them. I am a real newbie at doing my own evaluations, etc. This forum has been excellent in giving me the desire to learn my basses inside out, instead of just turning them over to others for evaluation, authentication or repair.

The neck was refinished when the bass was assembled in its current (wood) configuration in the early 70s. The butt of the neck has a undistinguishable something, perhaps a 7? followed by JAN 63 A, nothing marked jazz. I actually questioned the A knowing that it was a bit smaller profile neck for a P and was lead to believe that the jazz used the A profile back then.

If this is a P neck, the story that goes with the bass does not hold water, and my already weak faith in the originality of the body diminishes further.

The bass played really nice before I took it apart, but that was maybe twenty minutes. Very low action without issues. The neck was quick and easy on my hand. I was just restringing it when I noticed the posts so figured I would take it apart for a picture before I got any further along. I should mention that there are a couple thin shims, cut from some heavy, glossy paper advertising stock, under the neck. Once I get it set up and a couple hours play on it I will report back on the pickups, but I don't know that value of that opinion until I can determine the body. It may be legit, but when I pick the bass up, it just feels light to me. Any thoughts on that?
