I have just ordered my new P Bass from my local GC, and I should have it in under 2 weeks.

I have been playing a lighter bass for a few years and I am curious....

What straps are you using? I am needing a strap that will support the bass with limited shoulder strain for 3-4 hours. I have read that a wider strap spreads out the weight better than a thin strap or a pad. I am looking into a 3.5 inch leather strap.

Can you please share what you like to use?

I use the levys leathers M7GG2. It's 2 inch, but they do make a 3 inch. It adjusts like a nylon strap but stays locked on that setting, no slippage. I love it.

Both versions available below, they're pricey, but worth it.

I prefer wide (2.5) suede straps (Levy, Fender).

The ONLY straps I will use are ITALIA and mostly the 4 inch ones. They are made to order and you will not find them in any store. Right now, until TOMORROW, they are having a buy one get one free sale which you can read about here:
http://italiastraps.com/new-sale-page.htm
That sale ends 05/09/13. I suggest ordering NOW or checking back for future buy one-get one free offers. Believe me, if you have more than one bass, once you buy one then you'll want one for every bass you have. If you play 6 string Spanish guitar I bet you'll want one for every 6 string you own too.

I've been using Italia straps for at least 8 years. I still have my first one and it gets used frequently because it is on my number 1 bass, the one in my forum ID image. They are the thickest, softest most beautiful straps for the money I've ever seen. Easily comparable to custom straps costing four times as much, or more. (Local guitar tech worked on one of my instruments and said, "Where'd you get the $300 strap?") The ONLY downside is that since they are made to order, you'll probably have about a 2 to 4 week wait to get your straps. Each one is hand made to order in your choice of colors, they even have color combos.

The ONLY downside I know of to Italia straps is that they are so thick that they do not accept strap locks such as the Schaller brand. HOWEVER since they are so thick, YOU DO NOT NEED strap locks! I've never had one come off a strap button yet. I just leave them ON the instrument all the time and since there are no metal parts it is safe to do so.

If you are concerned about any neck-dive issues on an instrument, one of these straps with the suede backing cures it instantly. Suede backing is stock. If you are the type who likes to swing and easily shift your instrument around then order the slick glove leather backing at no extra cost. With suede backing where you put it is where it stays.

If you play in a normal or high position (like me) then standard length is ok. If you want to go belt buckle or below order extra long for $6 more.

At about $80 each they are worth every cent. When on a buy one-get one free sale like today you should get you two...at least. You can pay more for a custom strap but these are perfect for me and affordable.

I like the suede leather strap also. It holds the bass in place on my shoulder better. Less sliding.

The glove leather on my Levys slides just the right amount. I love that thing.

I had a string strap on my 35 Regal till it broke and I switched to 3.5 and 4 inch straps.

BTW my Quang Dok Chow Vietnamese Sorrento lawsuit copy is a fine guitar.

I use 2-1/2" and 3". Some of the straps, like Planet Waves Beatles collection, have to be kept away from your finish, to I put Ernie Ball strap locks on them and hang them on a rack in my music room....kind of pain but I like them.

I am considering popping for a pair of Italia 4" while they are on sale. I just took a peek and the sale has been extended until May 10th.

I've always liked Levy's and have them on all my basses and my Stat. My favorite is the red mock crocodile.

I use this Levy's "Led Walnut" more than any other strap. 2.5" padded. (M17T02-WAL)

Both of mine are Levy's. Same strap. Black with the "eyelets". One is the "distressed" version I use with my Antigua P, the other is the nice new looking black one that I use with my Classic 70's P. I'm not sure if they make them anymore. Both have been great and the distressed one has been my main gigging strap for over 5 years. Never had an issue.

I think I will go with the Clayton 3.5 inch black leather. I like that type of adjustment and the price is right for me. I will probably want to condition the leather a bit. I hope I will be happy with this choice.

Depending on your stature, 50" may be a bit on the short side if you're going to sling low. I hope this strap serves you well for many years to come.
