Welp, I took my '08 precision in for a tune up after 2 years in storage, and dudester calls me back. Truss rod nut spins freely. Sadly, neck is dead. But! The GC I took it to happened to have one in stock, some dude ordered one and never picked it up. Vintage spec, half price. This sucks, but at least I will have it back tomorrow. He told me its not uncommon for MIM basses' rods to go tango uniform like this. Any other MIM owners experience this?

I'm not thinking so. The neck has always been a bit goofy. Bought the bass off eBay a few months before I shipped out to Guam. That combined with 2yrs of storage with Steve Harris flats makes me think it had no chance to begin with.

So far this GC has been a pleasant change from the other GCs that I've been too. Courteous helpful staff. That alone surprised me.

Can't say I've experienced anything like that with my MiM. I'd like to think its because of the Harris strings you mentioned. Anything in that gauge requires a stronger neck and the MiM standard necks don't have that kind of strength. I experienced something almost as close with an aftermarket neck and the Jamerson strings. Not the same strings, but similar gauges if I'm not mistaken.

IMO, The strings shouldn't make a bit of difference. At least in terms of them being the culprit due to the kind of strings they are.

The fact that it was in storage for two years strung with tension might have something to do with it, but I'd be more inclined to think that would have warped the neck to the point where the tech overextended the truss trying to get it straight. Meaning, the neck was trashed by the conditions it was kept in. The truss rod was ruined by an inexperienced tech trying to fix a neck that was ruined.

I've had a few MIM standard P's in my day. Ran a few with Fender flats which are definitely more high tension than the Rotos. If the neck was squirrely when you got it then it's possible that the truss rod was never really properly assembled. However, I've never had or heard of anyone who has had this problem on an MIM P bass.

Take that for what it's worth.

King, a very reasonable hypothesis. I had Rotosound flats on my precision for a week, they were so stiff and tight I was afraid of what was happening with the neck.

Anyways, it might have been the tech, maybe not. I think brotherdave had something to do with it.

I think this guy's on the up and up and my neck was boned long ago, probably before I bought it. The too good to be true price when I bought it had me a little worried then. I think it came back to haunt me.

Sometimes we get the bear, and sometimes the bear gets us.

Now you've got a story about your bass. How are the kids?
