Just trying to dig up some info on the pre in my Elite. I love the aggressive tone I get out of that beast. Was it something built in-house? Was it built by another company ala the Schaller tuners and bridges? Any replicates out there? Just curious.

These Elite preamps were a proprietary design by then Fender electronics wiz Paul Gagon who came to Fender about 1978 and last I heard he is VP of Engineering at G&L. There were two versions of these preamps, version A followed chronologically by version B. The Fender part numbers for them are the same 021363, but end with A or B. The printed circuit board production was contracted out after prototype testing at Fullerton.

These preamps are of course no longer available. Newer designs are more efficient with far longer battery life and better specs on paper, but in the day they did sound really good and in fact they still do.

Some other changes were made during the 2 year run including different bridge finishes (smooth chrome to textured chrome on the sides) and 2 different jack setups, one recessed and the other surface mounted.

The very best page that I know about which is devoted to them with links to a wealth of information and data on the Fender Elite Basses written by a real authority on them is HERE: http://www.riverband.demon.nl/elite.html

Fender Japan made their own versions of the Elite I and II during that period.

From my knowledge the Japanese Elite Precisions were featured with a 22-fret neck, 9,5" radius and a slimmer body. Discontinued in 1986.

My pleasure, you did a really good job and have created the best info page on Elite basses with links to several resources directly related to them. Well organized and thorough. Refer people there whenever I get a question about them and have it linked from my site.
