Hi guys

I have a squier p bass made in japan serial jv61394 in fiesta red (i think)

Any clues as to it's value ?

The tuning heads and other metalware is not in the best condition and is pitted in places, is it worth renewing these or will that detract from the possible value ?

Finally any ideas of where to sell in uk (ebay ?)

Thanks

It's a Squier so the value might not be what you expected. If it was a Fender then you'd be much happier selling it. I'd expect it bring perhaps 50% to 65% of what a Japanese Fender of the same vintage would bring. The JV serials are the earlier ones made at Fujigen Gakki. The J6 serials were made between June and August of 1983 during the 2nd year of Japanese Fender/Squiers at Fuji-Gen. Many say "JV" stands for JOINT VENTURE, others say it means JAPANESE VINTAGE. I go with JOINT VENTURE just because the relationship with Fender and Fujigen has been so productive now spanning 31 years.

Fiesta Red was a very popular Fender color in the UK because of Hank Marvin of The Shadows playing a Fiesta Red Strat. I think eventually everyone in The Shadows went to Fiesta Red.

It's worth more in quality. The JV's are great basses that simply have the wrong name on the headstock.

True. They do represent a good value in the market relative to Fender badged ones. There were some differences in components but not enough to matter much.

Don't change the hardware unless it breaks.

+1 to Brother Dave. Don't change any hardware or electronics. You can clean it up and remove any gunk and dirt, but the pitting, corrosion and patina actually add history and value to the bass.

The UK market has not depreciated as much as it has in the US. Still, I was amazed to see a JV model in two tone burst for sale on eBay UK with an asking price of #1199.00. Of course it hasn't sold at that price, but you might want to keep an eye on it to get a feel for that market.

All I could find in the US was a Squire CV series that sold in March for $400, with case, which is much more what I was expecting to see.

My pricing guide does not discriminate between series but lumps 83-84, in excellent condition, between $350 - $450, w/case.

That is a Stratocaster isn't it? Or was it a bass?

Thanks v much for the help & some great advice.

I've made some further equiries & research since my original post & have also been told to keep the hardware with it's aged look as it is. I had tried to upload some pics from my flickr account but no luck there :(

Yeah i've seen that one on ebay & keeping an eye on it (think he may be a dreamer :D ) but have been quoted around £300 - £400 for mine.

Having been in possesion of it for about 15yrs & never taking the time to learn (i also own an ibanez accoustic, squier strat & epi les paul which I can play albeit badly !!) I am now thinking I'd may as well get a set up done, spend some time learning to play the thing & have some fun !

Once again thanks for the help guys :) :)
