I'm considering modifying my Fender P to include a volume and tone bypass switch, probably using a push/pull pot on the tone knob. I mostly run the volume and tone on full anyway, but my understanding is that the 250k pots in P's do dull down the tone quite a lot. I do like that classic P sound, but sometimes I would like to brighten the tone up a bit and I reckon that bypassing the pots would give that option quite easily and cheaply. Has anybody attempted this mod? Thanks!

Those are good reasons to try it. The boost in upper tones will be substantial. Total control bypass is a mod for recording bassists with a passive instrument but brace yourself for the boosted upper mids. Often will need lots of EQ in post to make it sound right.

There's an alternative solution: single master volume without tone!

Try that and then try straight to output jack with no pots at all. There's quite a bit of difference.

I have considered this option, but the reason I want to try a total bypass, is to get the brightest sound possible. I never realized how much difference the pots made until I used Fender Jaguars and Jazzmasters. On them, the only difference between the lead circuit (on the neck pickup) and the rhythm circuit, is that the lead circuit uses 1meg pots, but the rhythm circuit uses 500k pots. The lead circuit is much brighter!

If you're looking for a brighter tone, put a TBX circuit.

Don't know what pickup you are using, but the Fender Original Precision Bass pickup is the brightest one I've ever tried. Love it and highly recommend it for a brighter sound.
