Hello!

I'm having serious GAS from this bass. Have you played this bass? What did you think of it?

I had one, it played great, I just didn't care for the active mode. I just like passive basses.

Interesting that you should say this as I feel the same way about the Active mode in my 2011 American Deluxe Jazz 5 ......... I play it in passive mode most of the time,........ I don't dislike the active mode,... I just think this bass sounds great in passive mode.

Well, that's important to me as well, the passive mode needs to be great. I don't want to play active all the time. Thanks for your sharing so far!

Any more thoughts on this bass?

I like the neck on this bass, it's fast playing, the Fender HMV bridge that allows for string through body or top load is also a nice bonus, over all this is a very good bass but in the end it's up to you, ......you have to like it, go try one out.
One side note though,....there was a batch of American Deluxe Jazz & P-basses in 2011 that had a hum issue with the N3 Noiseless pickup,...however there was a recall & I think Fender has since remedied the issue.

Really, really NICE. If you want an active P-Bass that's your daisy. For what it has and what it costs compared to the American Standard it delivers a lot more for a little extra money. Also the Deluxes often get more select woods so they are less of a crapshoot than a Am Standard. I'd rather have the passive Am Standard though if I can pick it out from about 10 to 15 different ones.

Most old fogies will take the passive one probably. If I wanted an active though that would be the Fender I'd Jones over.

I had one, white and rosewood board, great bass, but for me, in active it was to hot, it overdid the character of what I wanted from the bass, great bass, but was not for me, enjoy though.

I have the sunburst model and I love it.

Here's why I like it:

 -Extremely low noise
I have tested it with amps and DIs. Noise is a non-issue.

 -Precision pickup
I came from a Jazz Bass so was looking for something new. The Deluxe offers a Precision pickup and a Jazz pickup. In a sense, the Jazz pickup is a bonus. On the other hand, the Jazz pickup plays a vital role in getting some of the tones I like.

 -Tonal options
It has passive pickups with an active EQ, AFAIK. There is a master tone. When the active switch is on, the tone knob becomes ineffective. Instead, the EQ is be used to control the tone of the bass.

The EQ has a high, mid, and low. The high and low are stacked. The mid is stacked with the tone knob. With all that in conjunction with the pickup pickup selecting knob, which is continuously variable (there is a detent in the center position), there are plenty of tones to be had.

 -Extremely light weight
My Jazz Bass was an MIM. My American Deluxe is MUCH lighter than my Jazz. FWIW, it might be lighter than my American Deluxe Strat!

 Notes:
 -The pickup selector
The most extreme tone changes occur around the center detent. However, when plugged into a DI on nice preamps, the changes in tone become more noticeable in all positions.

 -Harmonics
The bass is great for getting harmonics (especially the Jazz pickup). This is a good thing in my opinion. They’re there if you want them. You have to control your playing or adjust the EQ to suppress them (controlled playing being the more effective option).

 -The mid EQ
The mid EQ seemed excessive to me at first. I guess you could say the frequencies it boosted did not work well with my fingers. I do a lot of cutting here. However, I recently discovered that I like a slight boost when using a bit of fingernail tone directly above or slightly behind the Jazz pickup (with most or all of the sound coming from the Jazz pickup).

 -The color/wood
I own the sunburst- although I might have gotten another color if more were available. In the case of the wine transparent model, I think the wood is ash instead of alder. I was thinking of getting that model, but to my taste it was too glossy in person.

I'm very happy I got it. Let me know if you have any questions.

This bass has its cons.

- no abalone dots

- 22nd fret not present

- limited choice of colours

Thanks for your reply's, for the Cons also.

Most of the cons you mention don't bother me, so i'm getting more and more convinced of buying one.

The Pro's out weigh the Con's with the Current American Deluxe Basses........ I love my 2011 American Deluxe Jazz 5, I even got it in my favorite finish/color...(Natural Finish w/black pick guard, & maple fretboard with black pearl block markers, & by the way I think the white & Black pearl block on the Jazz basses & White & black pearl dot markers on the P basses look great!!..) the colors/finishes Fender has made available for the American Deluxe line, are colors that Fender knows are the most popular colors that will sell guitars & basses..the American Deluxe line are truely awesome basses & really ..with regard to it having the standard 20 frets & not having 22 or 24 frets.......it's a Bass guitar!! we're supposed to be holding down the bottom end....how often would you be playing in the 21-24 fret range in a live situation??( unless you're Victor Wooten),..I know I rarely venture past the 14th fret.. if 20 fret basses work for Jaco Pastorius, Geddy Lee, Marcus Miller, Chris Squire,Steve Harris, Paul McCartney ETC...then they should do the job for the rest of us..... :)

Okay- I want to try one or two. I wood imagine that they are like any other Fender. One needs to play as many as possible before pulling the cord. That's hard to do here because only two stores carry Fenders- Sam Trash and Guitar Senseless

Being an "Old Fogey" I'm starting to "out gas" instead of "gassing" for more basses. I just don't have it. If the Deluxe was killer I might go for it- I'd need to get rid of something first. A Honk Monster never hurts to have. :D

You should try a current American Deluxe P- Bass, I noticed a little extra attention to detail & yes you're right you have to try a few, I was lucky with regard to my 2011 American Deluxe Jazz 5 ..... I wasn't intending on buying a bass when I walked into the Music store back in mid May 2011,...... out of curiosity I picked up a 2011 American Deluxe Jazz 5 with Natural finish,....... it played like butter, Looked & sounded amazing ... 25 minutes later I walked out of the music store with it....... it was meant to be lol..
that being said I'm also starting to gas out,.......I have 8 great basses ( 7 Fender & 1 Ibanez) it would have to be a special bass or it would have to be a great deal for me to pull the trigger again...
