Hi Guys, I have been playing since 1972, using Gibson Thunderbirds for most of my career. I never owned a Fender till about six years ago when I bought a '74 Black and Maple P. I didn't use it much but appreciated its simple rugged construction and place in music history. Over the six years I have bought a '75 Walnut Fretless, a '74 Sunburst/maple and just finished building a fretless sunburst /maple using a '77 neck. I use the fretless every night on 3 songs and man does it sound fantastic! Pics of my Fender family.ImageImageImageImageImage

Your so Vain, Can't get Enough, All right Now. Boz Burrell is my fretless influence. Here is my first time playing fretless live. The bass is what is now my Walnut '75. I bought it at GC for 349.00 70's neck/tuners, import body most likley Ibanez. I bought the walnut body shortly after this. http://youtu.be/3RdCZn-rbjc

I'm not sure if Fender moved the thumbrest during the middle of 73 or nor but the 73 P basses I've seen have the thumbrest under the G string. My 74 looked just like your SB maple P when it was new except for the evil Badass bridge..

Maybe the pickguards have been changed on your basses? Have you ever looked under them to see where the holes are for the thumb rest?

Anyway those are all some cool P basses.

The black and maple and the sunburst and maple have original guards, I ran the serial numbers and they came back '73-'74. I have not checked the pots for dates. Both basses are not "parts basses" they came from owners who had them most of their lives. Given the location of the tug bar they as you say are most likely '74s. The two fretless basses are parts basses.

I got my 74 in 79 and thought it was a 73 for about 15 years- then figured it out. It kind of blew a hole in the side of my Battleship but with time I accepted that it was a 74. It took some theropy but I'm okay now.

Oh-- I guess I'm not the only P bass player who digs a real Levis jacket.

stroker vance, When a serial number comes back within a span of two years I always refer to the earlier number in my head. Not meant to device just easier for me I am grateful for the correction/information. The Sundurst/Maple came with the BA and the Dimarzio I am happy with the bass as is. LOL the Levis jacket! Pretty much how I dressed as a teen! The flares are from Old Navy..................... the girls department. LMFAO.

FYI:The finger rest/tug bar was relocated above the strings in 1974.

That same year ( 1974) fender stopped producing their tortoise shell pick guards and replaced the TS with a faked photographic style tortoise shell pg. Very few of the faked ts pgs are still around. Most were replaced with black pick guards which vastly improved their appearance.

I just thought that you might want to know that.
