It'd be great for me...because one day I'll want a fretless bass, and I've always had a hard time getting around down low on anything but a Jazz neck, as far as long scales go. Plus..I've come to rely on the P and J pickup config with that blank fingerboard. It's a good combination.

I know you can buy parts from other makers...

I'd opt for a Boner Precision!

I've been holding out for an American Hot Rod P... I've heard differing reports on them, but they seem like a good idea.

They came in an awesome transparent orange that combined with a rosewood neck and a tort guard makes for one of the best lookin bass's fender ever put out IMO.
A parts bass with stacked knobs would be pretty cool though...

I dislike the side-mounted PJs Fender did.

I prefer a good ol' PJ with a top-mounted jack and a 22-fret neck.

This is a Natural Ash model from the 1st generation Hot-Rodded American Series (1998-99). It doesn't sport a rolled-edge neck.

Sunset Orange Transparent didn't came into surface until 2000.

The Sunset Orange looks equally nice with a maple neck.
:P

It ain't mine... I wish. Though I haven't played one, those hot rod P's seem to be exactly what I'm looking for in a bass.

The natural ones date from the first 2 years of production ('98/'99). Natural was replaced by Sunset Orange Transparent circa 2000/01.

Fender discontinued the Hot-Rodded American series in 2003.

Of course Oteil can do what he wants with his basses. I'm only giving my opinion as if anybody's listening. LOL
I'm glad he used a Road Worn '57 Precision Bass. I own a passive Precision bass special that has a P+J setup and its sounds great!

I am trying to think back as to when was the first time I ever saw a Precision bass with an added Jazz bass pickup and I think it was on the back of a bass method book whose name escapes me.
The instructor/bassist had a picture of himself with a modded precision bass with the added Jazz pick up and a Tele bass neck with an extended finger board so that the neck had 22 frets only on the d and g strings and ended on high e.

I will have to look up that book. I remember being fascinated that the guy was rich enough to have a Jazz bass that he could hack off a pickup just to upgrade his Precision!

That was way before the concept of aftermarket pickups let alone availability had taken hold.

Burbridge doesn't take his 6-string monsters on the road while touring with Allman Brothers!

I had a black/maple hotrod P (usa) and it was a tidy bass, but I did find that when "blended" volume wise the Jazz pickup was a little weak. But overall it did play very well.
