Recently Oteil Burbridge had bought an original sunburst 1969 Precision Bass and converted it into a top-mount jack PJ. He said he loved the punch of his sunburst 1964 Jazz Bass and wanted a bass having the best of both worlds.

Luthier Bill Brooks who modified the '69 P did the same job on his sunburst maple neck '57.

Both basses now feature a Lindy Fralin Jazz Bass pickup in the bridge position.

Here's the sunburst '57 before

and after

I'm glad he likes the result, but he could have done the same thing on a Road Worn P-bass or some other vintage reissue and preserved the originality of two classic instruments that will never be recreated.

Otiel scratches his itch-future bassists lose!

It's a shame.

The one in the first picture is an original '69, but the other one you pictured is a Road Worn, so you're half-right.

And anyway, it's Oteil's bass, he can do what he wants with it. I'd rather hear a master musician using an amazing instrument and creating with it than hear about someone just collecting it for its value (and probably not playing it). I don't think that Oteil is just "scratching his itch" - he is a monster bassist and I think he deserves more credit than that.

The Allman Brother's got him into Fender, right? He brought his M. Graphite for the audition. But they didn't care for it, and handed Oteil a MIM Jazz Bass.

That's quite a leap in change.

Perhaps you mean his Quantum six-string monster.

While a great idea, it is not exactly an original idea.

Tom "T-Bone" Wolk (SNL Orchestra 80's & 90's/long time Hall & Oates music director/composer/arranger/producer) did a similar mod to his sunburst 64 P-Bass way back and is credited for fostering widespread interest in the P/J design as one of the early adopters. Since he was on TV with it weekly while perhaps not the first P/J playing pro he was the highest profile one. He actually used a lot of different basses, but the modded 64 P-Bass with the white DiMarzio Jazz pickup at the bridge was his #1. It was sort of unique in that it had a unique control setup with stacked pots that had separate volume and tone control for each pickup in the mode of the 1961 stacked Jazz Bass setup. I liked his 64 PJ P-Bass setup a lot and have always wanted to do one with the same controls but with different pickups. The Custom Shop replicated his 64 P/J Precision in a one-off recreation that a Fender VP personally delivered to him shortly before his death. He wasn't strictly a bassist but instead was a good all around musician who could play about anything. I think one of the last live shows he played live (if not the last) was as acoustic/electric flat-top soloist with Hall & Oates at the Troubadour in L.A.

So while the Burbridge Fender P/J is nice, it isn't exactly original yet I suppose it is nice enough to have its own thread.

Tom's PJ Bass uses a side-mounted jack.

And your point in mentioning that is what exactly?

If you want the best of both worlds with a P/J set up plus (side mount jack & Hip Shot X-tender drop D tuner included) & 3 tone Sunburst Vintage looks at a great price......I'm gonna mention it again...... Try the Reggie Hamilton Jazz Bass:

Reggie's bass gets no love on the Fender Forum... :(

Fender should offer another American Standard Precision that features a Jazz neck..and additional Jazz pickup at the bridge. Two volumes...no tone knob...top mounted input.

I'd buy one.

Actually...make it an American Special(old style hardware).

Thanks. I've been requesting that one for a while now. It's bound to happen soon or later.

Norman Watt-roy (top man) was another great user of the PJ set up, the mighty Rhythm stick a classic example.

I would love FMIC to offer the neck choice like I've heard back in the day. I know it's a pipe dream because of the fact that they are a mega-player in the instrument world, but it is nice to have dreams, right?
