First music I really got into was early-ish 70s British stuff - Rod & the Faces, Bowie, Slade etc - and was more drawn to Ronnie Lane, Trevor Bolder and Jim Lea rather than Ronnie Wood, Mick Ronson etc, which is how I knew bass was for me.

First players that I got into when learning the bass were the likes of Phil Lynott, John Paul Jones, Charlie Tumahai (Be Bop Deluxe) and Norman Watt Roy.

Then somebody introduced me to the playing of Jaco (through the albums of Joni Mitchell and Weather Report) which had an odd effect, insomuch as it made me realise that I preferred the playing of Max Bennett, Wilton Felder and Alphonso Johnson rather than that of the great man himself.

Paul Jackson (The Headhunters), Fred Thomas (the JBs) and Horace Panter (The Specials) really got me into funkier lines (esp. Fred Thomas, who played some of the most simple but groovy lines ever recorded).

I formed a true appreciation of Jamerson later than I should've done (ditto Bob Babbitt) and now view Pino as the most accomplished bassist of his generation, esp after his work with D'Angelo (I always knew Pino was a superb player but having never been a fan of the sound of the fretless bass didn't really give him a proper listen).

Funnily enough, when I first started learning the bass it was an album that inspired me rather than consciously going after any one player, and the album was David Live by David Bowie. Herbie Flowers absolutely nailed every track with a mixture of pop, rock, funk and groovy bass lines. It's an album I'd recommend to anyone that wanted to get into bass and wanted to hear a mixture of styles all on one album.

But out of them all, the player that does it for me, the one that I listen to in awe every time I hear anything that features him, is John Entwistle. A genuine one-off and an integral part of my favourite group's sound.

Of the newer players there's a band called White Denim (probably bigger in the UK/Europe than the US, I think) that features a young lad who sounds like a wonderful fusion of Chris Squire and Berry Oakley. Their 'D' and Corsicana Lemonade albums are well worth a listen - great playing throughout, and an absolutely killer rhythm section.

Oh, and through the medium of the internet/YouTube I've become aware of a chap called Bobby Vega, who has a style of playing (fingers and pick) that I love.

It was an impossible question, btw!!

I couldn't find him on the MXR site - is there a specific effect he's demoing?

I love his take on the O' Jay's For the Love of Money on this clip, he's such a good pick player. Ditto the Staple Singers' line (I think?).

I'm surprised Bill Wyman doesn't get much of a mention when it comes to these types of discussions.

And Tom Hamilton is another player who I think gets overlooked - he's come up with some really good/interesting lines over the years (particularly in amongst Aerosmith's 70s stuff).

Seems as this thread progresses, there are more and more artists surfacing, to say that there were only three is a bit hard. Obviously, there were some early players, such as, James Jamerson, John Entwistle and others that blazed a trail.

Now before everybody starts chasing me with torches and pitchforks, these two just came to mind.

Thinking about the first time I was overwhelmed by a song, I remembered hearing The Thrill Is Gone, by B.B. King, in 1969. i was already playing guitar for a few years and had been playing bass, but not really knowing what to do with it. Whoever the cat was, and I tried to find out, THANK YOU!

This has been a good thread.

Jerry Jemmott. A big influence on Jaco, I think.

If you get the chance try and have a listen to King Curtis Live at Fillmore West album. Jerry Jemmott is excellent on that album.

The rest of the band weren't bad either - inc. (amongst others) Bernard Purdie, Cornell Dupree and Billy Preston.

Speaking of Cornell Dupree, he's on the live Donny Hathaway album that features some wonderful playing by the inimitable Willie Weeks - is his solo part on Voices Inside (Everything is Everything) one of the tastiest bits of bass playing ever committed to vinyl?

So many fabulous bassists around!

Thanks for that!

I love the thumb/strum thing that he does at 1:10 on the Blow Torch demo.

I really think Bill Wyman doesn't ever get mentioned as far as bass goes because when he was 50 something he married like a 17 year old girl. What a freak. So all bass aside on that. I actually think he was a very good bass player. He had his own style and did a great job in the Stones. He admitted once that he didn't know the notes on the fretboard. He just played the thing.

Worse than that...he started dating the girl when she was about 13. He was in his later 40's.

His bass lines were so carefully worked out. He had a great deal of time to fit just the right part in the songs, and all. I think it's hard to reproduce what he did..without sounding "wrong"...or ackward.

Pretty creepy dude, though.

Jamerson and Carol Kaye, although back in 1967, I didn't know their names ... I only knew that the bass sounds on certain records appealed to me. I had that "aha" moment though while listening to the Super Session album and hearing Harvey Brooks. That's it, I thought ... the sound I'm going for in my head. My fourth third influence follows directly - Duck Dunn.

Influences in the sense of bass being an equal partner in music have to include Jack Bruce and John Entwhistle along with Paul McCartney. Pre-rock era (I grew up on Big Band and classical music ... the only thing my parents allowed in the house), influential and bassist weren't usually two words you'd use in the same sentence. I had no real idea of a bass sound carrying part of the tune until the soul/funk US sound and that you could stand out in a group as the Brit bassists were doing merged in my mind.

It's easier to play his style if you turn the bass straight up and down like he did in the 60's. You can cop a feel on how he did it-- not the 17 year old-- the bass lines!! Get your mind out of the gutter.

Meh, Bill Wyman is a perv. My best bass player friend once told me that Bill Wyman was the perfect example of how NOT to play bass guitar. This was about 1970 or so just when I was getting started. I agreed then, and I agree now. He Sucks. Totally. Forever. Unequalled.

It's fair to say Bill Wyman divides opinion then!

I think someone mentioned Lee Sklar previously. Stumbled across this yesterday and have to say the older I get the more I'm drawn to this type of playing - tasteful and makes it all look effortlessly easy... (and unless my ears deceive me he also throws in a little homage to Entwistle somewhere in there!)

Ron Carter, Ron Eoff of the Cate Brothers Band, Jimmy Haslip, Donald "Duck" Dunn, Rick Danko, Charlie Haden, Leland Sklar. I know that's more than 3.
