First influence: James Jamerson. As a kid listening to my older sister's Motown records made me think that I wanted to be a muscian. After deciding that, it was the basslines that made me want to choose that instrument.

Second influence: Paul McCartney. The creative inventiveness of his bass lines is astounding.

Third influence: Joe Schermie (Three Dog Night). The man laid down solid cool bass lines to all those monster hits. He never muddied up a song by over-playing, but played lines that always grabbed my attention.

Lee Sklar and Jimmie Johnson put me in awe today.

Having had the opportunity to think about this. If anyone has ever had a positive influence on me, and my playing, it has to be brotherdave. I've had the good fortune to count him as a friend.

Bass playing isn't just about notes and technique. His expertise in EVERYTHING pertaining to bass makes all the difference.

If you haven't already, check out his web site. Just do it when you have some spare time. There's a WHOLE lot of good information there.

I only hope than when I get a little older and things settle down that I'll have the freedom and time to travel like I want to. If I could I'd travel a lot. I want to take off and do stuff but things right now are making it impossible to do.

So many over the years but the 3 at the top would be:
Tiran Porter - Doobie Brothers
Stu Cook - CCR
Timothy B Schmidt - Poco/Eagles

My influences change with my evolution as a player. Every influence begets the next.

In no particular order..., Gene is first to come to mind as he was "the reason" I started playing bass ...

1. Gene Simmons
2. Roger Waters (w/Pink Floyd)
3a. Sting (w/ The Police)
3b. Geddy Lee
3c. Paul McCartney

Geezer Butler... without whom I probably wouldn't even listen to music, because it was the first thing "heavy" enough for me.
Geddy Lee... who showed me the difference between being a musician and a Rock Star.
Roger Waters... who showed me how simplicity can be beautiful.
